Gordon lightfoot surprised a crowd at the Highwayman Inn in Orillia Saturday night with a spur of the moment performance of one of his biggest hits.
“He came up sort of impromptu and played If You Could Read My Mind,” said Steve McEown, one half of the popular local duo, Even Steven.
Guests were throwing a birthday party for lightfoot’s cousin, Susan Cox, McEown noted.
His musical partner, Steve Eyers, also related to the folk singer who honed his musical talents in the St. Paul’s United Church choir as a boy, accompanied lightfoot on bass.
“A number of people were crying; it was such a moving moment,” said McEown.
He said lightfoot’s visit gave him a chance to celebrate his cousin’s birthday and take in the duo. ”After the song was done, there was a huge cheer.”
