Gordon Lightfoot is on Canadian Idol (CTV, 8 p.m.), and it's about time. Lightfoot actually is an idol and a man whose work helps define us. Last week, Lionel Richie was on the show and his songs were sung by the contestants. Excuse me, Lionel Richie? It's supposed to be Canadian Idol, not Holiday Inn Airport Lounge Singer Idol.
For tomorrow's Canadian Idol, by the way, CTV has an announcement. "For the first time ever on any Idol program anywhere, competitors on this Thursday's one-hour Canadian Idol results episode will accompany themselves on musical instruments." That's terrific, but I hesitate to speculate about "instruments." I mean, in my house, when we play Canadian Idol, air-guitar counts as an instrument. The kitties took a vote and allowed it.
Seriously -- and before somebody at CTV misplaces their sense of humour and writes a blistering letter -- Thursday's show should be a great event. The six finalists will play guitar, piano, bass, mandolin and fiddle as they perform Lightfoot's Canadian Railroad Trilogy.
