Today I'm leaving for Ireland. It's a direct flight from Chicago to Shannon.
This trip is a tenth wedding anniversary gift to myself and my wife.

We are renting a car with a CD player and I will be taking Songbook along. I'm Looking forward to seeing this beautiful country while listening to my favorite musician of all times. We will be going to the Cliffs Of Moher, The Burren, The Dingle Peninsula,
The towns Of Dingle, Ventry, Kenmare, Killarney, Sneem and Killorgin.

Also, I'm very excited about listening to the traditional music played in the pubs. I heard that it can be very folky. The many Irish ballads tell stories through music.
I can't wait for this adventure, and to share
my Lightfoot music with the good people of Ireland, if I get the chance to.
I would love to listen to The Wreck, or IYCRMM or any Lightfoot music in a pub, next to a cozy peat fire with my beautiful wife and a dozen or so new Irish friends.
Well, off I go. I'll check this thread when I get back, and let everyone know how the trip went.

Hello Everyone, We made it back in one piece and had an incredible time!! What a beautiful country!! The daffodils are in full bloom over there and people were mowing grass!! It never rained once and it was around 45 degrees for a high which was quite comfortable.

The trip went well after I got the hang of driving on the left hand side of the road. This can be a little scarey until your mind accepts the fact that you are SUPPOSED to be on the left. We visited the Cliffs of Moher and saw some breathtaking views. These 600-800 foot high cliffs rise at a 90 degree angle straight up out of the Atlantic Ocean.
This was a dramatic way to begin the trip.

We had a long drive to our cottage which was on the Dingle peninsula. We got in and unpacked and decided to go in to Dingle town.
This town has PILES OF PUBS!!
We went to one called The Small Bridge Bar and listened to live traditional music. This was VERY COLD unless you were near a fireplace so my wife found a cozy spot and we settled in over a pint.

Here is the surprise of our trip!! I went thinking about how fun it would be to listen to Gordon Lightfoot in a pub over there and now I was thoroughly enjoying Traditional Irish music. In fact, I could not get enough of it. During our stay, at about 9:30 PM every evening you could wander the town and stick your head in any door you heard something you liked!!! All kinds of music!! Violins, banjos, guitars, drums, flutes, harmonicas, and "squeeze boxes" were common instuments and the Irish pub scene was an unforgettable experience.

I listened to plenty of Lightfoot in our car as we drove the countryside but WOW!! The music in the Pubs was awesome. We also went to McCarthy's Pub and listened to a Van Morrison type musician. His name was Roesy and he was terrific. We bought his CD after the concert and it is getting alot of play time.

Ireland certainly was not a dissapointment to me. The music, food and beautiful countryside were enough to make me want to go back. But, the Irish people were so genuine and kind I will guarantee it had an impact on me. This trip was a learning adventure for me. I ended up bringing a little bit of the Irish back in myself.

Welcome Back! Tons of Pubs hmm sounds like I need to take a trip. Glad you had a great time. My Mother's family is Irish and Native American, it is fun to pull out the Irish on occasion. St' Patty's will be a great treat for you this year. Hope to see you at a Gord concert, what a nice follow up for the anniversary right?

Thanks, and yes, I'm anxious for my first ever Gord concert. I'm going to do Aurora, IL on August 13. I wish I knew when tickets go on sale. The Paramount Theatres web site
doesn't even acknowledge that a Gord concert even exists in August yet.

Call them direct Titan, don't wait for it to reach their web site.
I already have my tickets for Northhampton and Portland Maine, and those aren't until Oct. It's surprising how early some of these venues put the tickets up for sale.

Call them and be real nice but call often and get someone's name in the box office. They'll remember you and sometimes it helps to leave a number.

Just a though as I read your postings, it has been twenty four years since Gordon last visited Ireland. That was in May 1981, what hopes for a visit now that he is back to health and on the road again ?

How nice to get your warm Irish Greeting. It would be great to see Gordon Lightfoot visit his Irish fan base. We had a wonderful time in Ireland, and even saw Fungi; the Dingle Dolphin. We loved the view of the Blasket Island from the coast and downed a few Jameson Whiskey drinks at Paudie O'Shea's pub in Ventry.

I'm already wishing I could go back.

Also, Jenny; I will take your excellent advice and call the Paramount direct. I will let you know what I find out.

Glad you enjoyed the trip. I went over to Dublin for my brothers wedding back in the early 80's. I brought my guitar and got to sit in on a few sessions in a pub I think was called "Leinster House", as I recall we did a few Lightfoot tunes.

Yes the Irish are an amazing people, is it any wonder that we Americans who are of Irish heritage are so proud of that fact.

Also, thanks for the heads up of GL coming here to Portland ( I think it was Jenny)
