Out of context it may seem simple, but when read with the rest of the verse...the utter love and heartbreak it implies that he was experiencing as his ex-love was in the arms of another cuts to my core.

I find the line in the song,"Walls" about running around in socks "and that's what socks are for",very amusing! When I first heard the song,like most people,I thought the song was over and then suddenly there's one more verse. It still gets a bit of a laugh from me. It's been the B! This is difficult. It's like trying to name the best songs, least favorite songs, best folk artists, etc. Even though I've been listening to Lightfoot since the 60's, when he became my favorite artist, I went though the lyrics of songs on this site, all of which I am most familiar with, and compiled three pages of "lines", far to many to present. Here are a few:
