Hey Y'all,
Did anyone see the Seinfeld episode where Gordon Lightfoot and the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald are mentioned?

Yes, but it was several years ago. I just remember the confusion over -Was Edmund Fitzerald the ship or that songwriter? Was Gordon Lightfoot the ship or the songwriter. I found it quite funny.

I missed that one...but on a similar note...I was watching COPS (re-run) the other night and the police were investagating a robbery at a grocery store. In the backround you could hear The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on the stores speaker system. Made me forget all about the bad guys !!!

I've been out of the loop for awhile so just came across this thread... The best part of that Seinfeld show was when the discussion ended and Elaine says, "I love his voice" or something to that effect. I also remember seeing High Fidelity and giving my husband an elbow when the mention of GL was made in that movie, which was very good but seem to disappear pretty quickly. (The book is very funny also.) I love it when out of the blue you hear his name dropped.
Now here is a strange one -- Sun. nite I went to see what my kids were watching since Malcolm in the Midd. was long over and the tv was still on. They were watching something called Mission Hill and right before I went to turn it off (because it looked and sounded awful -- nasty animation and irritating voice overs) I hear GL singing Sundown. It's coming from the car on the tv. After a line or two one character says something like - I'm sick of your tissues and GL tapes - and then ejects the tape and throws it out the window. We watched the rest, about 10 minutes, and no one could see any redeeming value to it and I couldn't figure out the context of the GL vignette - whether it was perjorative or not. But like I said I like coming across his name unexpectedly like that. Anyone else see this or know anything about this seemingly strange show?

Well, this message was awhile ago,of course I was not here then. I also recall that almost 2 years ago on the CBS show,"Becker" starring Ted Danson,TWOTEF also got mentioned there. Becker & friends Bob And Jake sit at the counter of the diner owned by their female friend (I forget her name off-hand). She's behind the counter telling them about a man she once dated or was married to and how they would fight and argue all the time and how it almost came to blows between them. The character Bob,with a look of shock & disbelief at what he's hearing,up and says,"What was your song? The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald?!!" Very funny! Watch for it whenever this show finally gets into re-runs. Borderstone, outta here and Alberta Bound!

Hey Border...you've really been diggin' thru the thread archives! The librarian must be getting suspicious of you! I had no idea there have been so many references to our favorite singer on TV through the years! Of course, I don't watch a lot of television so I guess that's why I wasn't aware.

Michigan! You know,I'm surprised he was never mentioned on '70s sitcoms. You would think that The Partridge Family or The Brady Bunch would have been fans of his. I would guess Jan B. or Laurie P. would have a thing for him. "All I ever think of is Gordon,Marcia! Marcia Marcia Marcia! Borderstone, outta here and Alberta Bound!

Having lived through that period...I was 14-18 during the time those shows were on television, I can assure you that both sitcom families were absorbed with pop music, not folk. Gord was not the kind of icon that the Brady girls or Partridge kids would have worshiped. The Partridge Family was, loosely, a fictional version of a real singing pop family of the 60s - the Cowsills. They had 3 or 4 hit songs in the late 60s, a couple of which still get airplay on oldies stations, including: "The Rain, the Park and Other Things" and "Indian Lake." Aside: The little Cowsill daughter, Susan, is still around today and still writing and singing. She recently did a cameo on the latest cd released by Hootie and the Blowfish, they having recorded one of her songs.
The Brady Bunch, on the other hand, was a sitcom brought out to compete with the likes of The Partridge Family's popularity; rather than being based on a real family.
For what it's worth, that's my .02! Somewhere: Still hangin' here and goin' nowhere!

Further Aside:
Not only is Susan Cowsill still performing and writing, (see: Continental Drifters, Dwight Twilley Band, Psycho Sisters, the Bonoffs)but The Cowsills still exist today in an "on and off" again fashion, as well, reuniting in various configurations to perform live concerts and, occasionally, record. They'll be performing in September, 2003 at A Taste of Rhode Island in Newport. Individually, most of the brothers are still performing in small venues, too. Am I a die-hard Cowsills fan? Nope! But all of this info is available on the web. You got me searchin' Border and I just couldn't stop!

Actually, and not to correct you..but I'm guessing you meant that the Brady Kids started singing to compete with the Partridges. I don't know why they'd have to compete, they were both on Friday nights. Hmm..I wonder,is that why Felix and Oscar did singing on The Odd Couple? Brilliant idea! Only Tony Randall and Jack Klugman could seriously out-perform those guys! Ingenious! (K-I-D-D-I-N-G ) Borderstone, outta here and Alberta Bound!

Yeah, but Oscar Madison sure could call a square dance to the tune of Turkey in the Straw (lead 'em with your left, follow with your right stand up sit down fight fight fight!) I wonder how he'd do on The Auctioneer?

I remember (ok I'll cop to it) watching an episode of "Suddenly Susan" with Brooke Shields. She was a writer at some magazine. One day she and her co-workers got into an elevator, the doors closed and they were talking, all of a sudden over the Muzak, came
"Beautiful". One of the coworkers said "Shhhhhhh! Listen! it's Gordon Lightfoot!" Everyone's eyes got real big, and I think the picture faded to black.
It wasn't exactly complimentary to Gord. Maybe the writer of the script was not a Gord fan!
