G.Lightfoot Christmas songs?

Did Gordon ever do a Christmas album, or sing any Christmas songs? The only songs I can think of that sound quasi-Christmas is "Song for a Winter's Night" and "If Children Had Wings" are there others??

I never considered "If Children Had Wings" as a Christmas song. How did you come up with that?

With respect to Christmas Tunes, to my knowledge he has never recorded any, kinda hard for me to picture him singing Jingle Bells or White Christmas...LOL anyway Song For a Winter's Night isn't Christmas based at all, he has said many times it was written in a thunderstorm in July in Cleveland. The only song with any reference to the festive season is Circle of Steel. Unless there is older material ( before my time) I do not know of.

I agree that "Circle of Steel" is another Christmasy song with lines like "Sights and sounds of the people goin' round, everybodys in step with the season...DECK THE HALLS was the song they played, in the flat next door where they shout all day"

"Song for a Winter's Night" from GORDS GOLD always reminded me of Christmas time in Detroit..."The snow is softly fallin'...Upon this winter night with you...The morin' light steals across my windowpane, where webs of snow are driftin'" It ends with "I would be happy just to hold the hands I love, and to be once again with you" then the sound of jingle bells. Reminds me of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" type songs.

"If Children Had Wings" is from ENDLESSWIRE (one of those albums I play during the winter-time alot) The song struck me as a quasi-Christmas song...
"There's a love I hold dear, and it shines through each year [Christmas] And it makes things seem different somehow [Seeing your family/friends & seeing the children happy for Christmas time is a good time to reflect on your values & can make you reaccess your life and see things "different"-better] Its for better or worse, its for people who thirst, for a love that burns brighter right now [Christmas]. Then Gordon goes on to sing a song of hope for children [Angel wings].

Is there any more?


P.S. I'd like to hear Gord do a version of "There is Love" like Paul Stookey's 1971 version(from Peter, Paul & Mary).

Gord shattered my illlusion when I read about the circumstances in which he wrote "Song for a winters night".
For years I imagined he wrote that in a snowy Canadian winter!

I have had such an image of Gord while he was writing "A Song For A Winter's Night" for so long that the true image can't even penetrate it. It probably has to do with the image after he sings - I would be happy just to hold the hands I love - cuz he's a lot more than happy!!

Do you both refer to the comments Gordon Lightfoot makes when he says: "This song was written during a thunderstorm in Cleveland"?

Hm, makes me wonder at what season of the year? Does it ever snow in Cleveland?

The image the song conjures makes be think that Gordon Lightfoot was indeed sitting at a table in a cozy room with an open fireplace when he wrote this song.

OK, The song (Winters Night) is SO beautiful, I think he may be kidding us all about the thunderstorm in Cleveland. I too, heard the Cleveland thing at the Northampton concert in March. At first, the sigh comes out and you think "Oh no" and feel deflated, then I thought "that little rascal is having a good time with us!!" At least I feel better thinking he's kidding us and not lose the romance of the time in which he wrote it.

I've been sneaking on to this site at work for quite some time and putting my two cents in once in a while, but I've finally joined the 21st century and bought my own PC for home, so now I've become a member and I'm so glad to be a part of this wonderful site and to be associated in some way with all of you wonderful people!

He said he was staying at a friends place while he was doing a couple of shows and he started to write about snow and winter and this huge thunderstorm started happening outside the building.

At Wolftrap before launching "Song for a Winter's Night" he talked about writing several wintery-snowy type songs and said he'd like to sing a wintery song now, then proceeded to sing the first verse of "Winter Wonderland"!
