Favorite Gordon Lightfoot song???
Ask an easy question!!!
My favorite album has to be "Summer Side of Life" yet my favorite songs are those less popular and never played live.
I love 'Looking at the Rain' as it had to be written especially for me. I found out one Friday that a girl I had been seeing on a regular basis decided to get married that weekend and I wasn't the groom! Without reason I got into my car that night and drove with no destination in mind. It was pouring rain and the wipers seemed to keep rhythm to Gord's music on the cassette. In 'Looking at the Rain' Gord sings about "a picture frame of lace" which only then I realized was a wedding veil! The entire song summed up my situation and emotions. I made it back home after the weekend and as they say, "time heals everything"...
My other favorite has to be 'Whispers of the North' which, in my opinion, is written as a chant. It is best sung to the rhythmic motion of canoe paddles cutting into the water of some remote northern river. I have canoed some of the same canoe routes that Gordon has and anyone who does cannot help but be inspired by the rugged beauty of this wonderful country of ours!
After that, name any other song and it will also be my favorite.

i have recounted previously my story of how I first heard that superb song whilst sadly looking out of the window during a
typical UK rainstorm.
I was pretty surprised to see a new topic by Yuri and thinking that there could only be one lighthead with that name I checked his profile and was relieved to find that he must now be home after his hospital sojourn to have today started not one but three new topics as his maiden venture. Welcome to the grpoup Yuri no doubt many have no idea who you are and will with luck and determination meet you in person come November. But meanwhile they can visit your most useful Toronto visitor's site which I was also relieved to find is still alive and well

Yuri - "Whispers of the North" has always done the same for me. But I envision winter work - snowshoeing, postholing when caught without,the rythmic "sink 1/3" and not thow snow up on your mackinaw with foot lifts.
Whenever I hear it I think of my favourite winter treks and use it to get excited about packing gear the night before.
You're right - it works for me as a canoeist , too. I can picture flat water rythmic paddling with a beaver-tail bent-shaft paddle; deliberate and paced for the long haul. My particular imaginary picture of that seems to work best for a stillwater lake, or flatwater slow and lazy mornin' river, followed by the rythmic paddling you mention.
Sure are good memories.

Like most of us here, I would say 97% of Gord's songs are my favorite...but because of its history, because it was the first song of his I remember hearing, because it has stood the test of time and because it still thrills me every time I hear it...If You Could Read My Mind wins the prize for my favorite song if I have to name just one...and then the 96.8% that's left after that.
Whispers of the North is right up there too. I am not a canoe-er or a snowshoe-er, but I am a country girl and love the outdoors, so yeah the song brings beautiful visual images to me too. There is a hypnotic rhythm to it.
Summer Side of Life is a special album to me, Yuri, as it is the first Lightfoot album I bought with my hard earned babysitting money (back when babysitters were paid 50 cents an hour and albums cost 5.99)

When I hear IYCRMM I NEVER ever don't feel like I did back when I was a teen and heard it for the first time.
I don't think there's any other song like that for me. Many of them are darn close tho.....darn close...
