Time and interest, probably. If you weren't born into the age of computer use, the technology can be intimidating (or the idea of it, anyway.) Some artists are very into websites, real hands-on, others farm it out, still others have little or no web presence. At least Gord has the Linus web page, such as it is. And sites like Wayne Francis' website. And the fan newsgroup and this discussion forum. He's too guarded about his personal life to chat online with who knows who's at the other end. Much better to chat in person after a concert.
