Hi everyone, I have just - to my ultimate happiness - discovered somewhere where I can revel freely in my love of Gordon L.
Thiry years ago - in The Gambia, West Africa, someone gave us the LP of Old Dan's Records - and for years that was my only contact with the bard. But that was richness in itself.
Coming to the UK to live, it took the arrival of CDs for me to discover that it was possible to expand this acquaintance - to a limited degree.
Suddenly I realised that this incredible songster was an international star - Yes - really quick on the uptake - that's me!
I was then dependent on friends going to Canada for CDs- but - as my old LP was virtually unplayable - nobody ever returned with Old Dan's Records - that took the Internet - where I started to discover guys like you!
I just want to pay tribute to Gordon Lightfoot's genius on that one album. Never mind the other glories.
Firstly the title track- just really makes me want ot kick off my shoes and boogie - I feel as if I'm there - partying to Old Dan's Records.
Mother of a Miner's Child - unbelievably poignant and beautiful in its simplicity - that was my first love.
Lazy Mornin' - I sometimes just yearn to hear that slow, easy, lazy voice and the atmosphere is almost palpable.I even forgive him the chauvinism of 'women on the run'. It's like a slow cup of coffee - well tea in England!
Hi'Way Songs- do I need to even go on.
But my ultimate favourite is - You are What I Am - that is so full of an irresistable joie de vivre - it saw me through when my marriage broke up- I could never resist its optimism - I still can never play it just once - and hardly ever stay in my seat.

I have endured years of teasing from my husband ( wonderful in every other way) and kids because of my adulation of Gordon ( although my son just upped and borrowed a whole raft of my Gordon Cds I noticed!) that it is great to take my rightful place in life - among you wonderful people - who really recognise true genius.

Yeah,well, I've been teased for years over my "Gordon Adulation." Which, considering I am a guy, does I suppose pose certain gender preference questions in the minds of some folks. Thankfully, my wife shares in the adulation.

What an interesting post! That is a beautiful album, isn't it? We started listening to Gordon, also about the same time that you were introduced to that album..
maybe 31 or 32 years ago. But, fortunately
we had the good fortune of being able to buy his albums when they came out, and of hearing him in concert.
Also, didn't have to be teased by my husband as he is just as much of a fan of Gord's as
I am. It is the one thing that we have always

What an interesting post! That is a beautiful album, isn't it? We started listening to Gordon, also about the same time that you were introduced to that album..

I just LOVE the bass part on "Farewell to Annabel". Take a listen to it and note how "meaty" the bass part is. I just noticed it recently.

Its great to have you on board, I can just imagine what its like to listen to snow edged Lightfoot songs in the middle of Africa, it must be a "cool" experience. "Song for a winters night", would be great.

thinking that only Gord could sing. We used to joke about the fact that our children
probably thought that Gord was the only person that did concerts. We started bringing them with us to his concerts when they were very young.

I did listen to Farewell to Annabel and - yes I agree about the bass line - it lends a very exciting edge to the song.
Those of you who have had the incredibly good fortune to hear and see Gordon live - does he vary the songs - or are they pretty much as recorded? I have enjoyed different renditions of a couple on different albums - but - I just wonder what the experience of hearing them live is like?
It never struck me at the time - that Canadian songs in the blazing humid West African heat was an experience that I should register - but looking back . . .

Watchman, I agree with you 100% percent. I've seen a lot of different performers over the years and few, if any, are as consistent as Gord. Obviously, he's a perfectionist and expects his concerts to sound as good as the recordings. Although I do kind of enjoy watching him screw something up. Doesn't happen often & he's pretty self deprecating about it when it does. He forgot the words to Sundown one night. Said they went right out of his brain (lol).

Considering how many songs he's written it's a wonder he remembers the lyrics as well as he does (I know, I know - singing them skaty-eight times a year over 30-40 years should impress them on the brain but I'm a writer and every once in a while I come across something I wrote a while back and don't even recognize it as my own.)
MANY moons ago I saw him in concert (at a college venue) and he was having a *really* bad night - mostly he was PO'd because he had to stop due to a string breaking mid-song and the crowd got a bit restless waiting while he replaced it (Frisbees flying overhead). But he recovered, had 'em going with The Auctioneer (first time I'd heard it) and finished the night to applause. But I bet he still was happy to be outta there.
