With some songs when you listen to 1 recording of it you get the feeling that it means something but when you listen to another recording you get the feeling that it means something else.(At least I do)
SHADOWS: When I listen to the original version I get the feeling that it is just another song about unrecruited love. A loved one has walked out the door and now the other person wants him/her back. But listening to the re-recording I get a strange thought that a loved one has just had a death in the family and it hasn't really affected you but the other person is torn up about it and has been sad ever since. And the person singing wishes she would learn to live with the loss and be happy again.
CANADIAN RAILROAD TRILOGY: The orignial sounds like a happy, optimisic song telling about the past but the re-recording is a bit more emotional due to it's slowing down during the 2nd and 4th parts of the song instead of speeding up. It's a little bit sadder sounding.(I don't know about the live version)
ALBERTA BOUND: Both songs mean the same thing to me, just the original makes it sound like it's daytime while the re-recording makes it sound like night.

A rather odd yet interesting topic.
To me the original Endless Wire's always had a positive "Keeping On Yearning" style to it, while the GG version sounds more like a perservering "I'd Rather Press On" theme.
Borderdude's right though. 'Different strokes for different folks'. LOL :D
