Is it because I am newer to this site that
I do not understand some of the comments
that go back and forth between some of you?
Are there actually some of you out there
that really care about spelling? Are there
actually some of you out there who care if
somebody has not read every single line in
every single topic and may ask a question
that has already been asked in a previous
discussion? Is it that annoying? Perhaps
I am simply the new kid in town trying to
understand the "cool crowd". Many of you
have a much greater knowledge of Gordon
Lightfoot than I do, and I enjoy reading
your comments, however there are times when it seems that this is not a GL forum at all.
If I'm wrong, tell me so, and I'll talk to
you later.

Probably a combination of grief, boredom and endless waiting for new material has brought us to this sad state of affairs. But that should change in a few days.
Stay tuned.

A lot of the comments that go back and forth are done in jest. Many of us have known each other for years. We get to goofing off sometimes, and I can see where a new person would read a few of the remarks the wrong way.
As far as spelling goes, we tease DMD3 because he's the young'un in the group. He used to make a few spelling errors and we'd jump all over him, but it was all done in fun, and I've got to admit, he has learned to spell.
I don't mind hearing the same question or reading the same discussion over again at all. We have to realize, new people come in here daily, and chances are, they will ask a question that has already been asked, and 9 times out of 10, they will get answers. It's really an individual choice as to whether or not they want to read every post. Again, some of the comments about this are made jokingly. Once you get to know everbody, you'll know what I mean.
I would much rather see discussions get recycled than to have the group die out. The newsgroup is very boring to me. People either think there is nothing left to say that has not already been said, or they are afraid to speak their minds, like some higher being with more Lightheadness will send a thunderbolt at them. I like this place the way it is. Nice and open.

Doug,
I think as far as the current "active posters" Im probably one of the old timers and I've seen the discussion board go through many changes over the years.
As Cathy said, most of the comments are in jest. Although there are a few personalities around here that can be somewhat abrasive, I still don't think they mean any harm. After all, variety is the spice of life - and yes it's quite obvious which personalities clash. You just have to get to know everyone and kind of decide for yourself what comments to chalk up to the person making them and which ones you'd care to give credence to.
But in any event, don't go away. Most everyone's bark is worse than their bite and they are a very informative bunch, albeit opinionated

I think it's always correct to care about spelling. It's one of the ways other people view us. If you spell like a moron, chances are you really are one.

I agree, Cathy, the News Group has really died down. I'm pretty much afraid to say anything over there because each time I do, I usually get chastized in one way or another - and it doesn't seem to be in jest as it does over here. Actually, my posts usually get ignored over here, which I much prefer compared to the responses at the NG. Several years back, it was an ongoing joke amongst some of us who were actively posting here - "you want a topic to die, just have Janice post to the thread"
Anyway, I imagine both places will start hopping with posts in the next few weeks.

Sure it's correct to care about one's own spelling, but is it correct to put down another for their spelling - in a meanspirited way? I mean isn't it possible to just think they are morons to yourself?

Sheesh!! What kind of a comment is this?? Who are you anyway? I didn't know spelling was so important to a chat board on Gordon Lightfoot! One thing's for sure : If this is the barometer you think measures how other people view us,... how about tactlessness and arrogance?

Oh well, as someone here says ever onward.
Doug plunge in just remember the water can get mighty chilly occasionally. But, the main point is to have fun evben when others act like the end of the world has come (it hasn't, trust me, we're still here).

Whoa! The whole spelling thing came up because DMD3 was posting and it became difficult to understand. As Cathy said his spelling has improved, and I think most of the reason was because we joshed him and he cared enough to do better. He is still in school and I bet even his teachers have seen an improvement. Spelling is important and what Rob said has truth to it. Adults are judged by their spelling, just as we (as a people not individually) used to judge people who couldn't read. The spelling topic has been a running joke for a while now. Calm down, no "buddy" is mean spirited here. Haven't you ever heard the "Gordon Lightfoot fans are the nicest people"?

if I accidentally misspelled a word though I wouldn't want someone to bark at me for my spelling if I didn't mean it
otherwise, it is advantageous to spell all words as correctly as possible if you can
