Think about it Gord fans...
Everybody on this site and all other Gord fans elsewhere...
How lucky we really are!
Spare a thought for the unenlightened, all those unfortunate people, who haven't heard of him or his music!
How would you convert them?
How would you explain to them the brilliance of this man?
What makes him so different to every other artist?

I tell my children that life is for the living, it is to be experienced, to welcome new things and people into that life. The sum total of a human comes from the people and experiences they have had over their lifetime. I would suggest that a person take in all experiences that this all too short time on earth gives us and to be grateful for the chance to have those experiences. This would include listening to Lightfoot (or whomever) for the experience of it. Only by putting ourselves out there and going for it will any of us truly be living life. Lightfoot just happens to be one of the biggest experiences of my life and I hate to think of anyone not giving a good and serious listen to him at least. That in itself, good or bad, is part of the life experience to me. I can only then hope that the unitiated will see the brilliance and humanity that Gord puts into his music. It's up to them from that point on. I've done my job, Gord's done his and all that's left is hope. Hope that they will feel the Lightfoot magic.

Gord fans,
We must never become arrogant because of our good fortune.
We should be humble and strive to help others...

Frank v: Your right, we should follow Gordon's lead. Just like in his cable TV appearance he starts with..."If you see me on the TV acting proud, please understand why I don't talk to loud" and later "If you want to know an answer, I can't turn your life around, For I am just a painter passing thru the underground".[Char-I don't have the VHS of it, I'm just going from the shows song list] Obviously Gordon is a humble man. I've got a 9 year old girl who doesn't yet comprehend the greatness of this man. We'll get in the car & I'll put Gordon on the CD and she'll complain "...not that guy again!" I'm sorry, I just can't get into "Slim Shady". Hopefully one day she will see the brilliance of this man...his down to earth values, love of nature, and his love of life.
I just wish he would still come out with new albums every year or so. I hope he doesn't retire for a long time(maybe from touring, but not from writing/singing albums). I was bummed when I read that Gord retired after "East of Midnight" because "when your albums aren't selling it's not practical for a man to spend his life chained to a desk...you have to grow up and realize that there is a new generation of recording artists out there" If I could have said something to him at the time I would have said "Just because your albums aren't selling like they used too doesn't mean anything...you are one-of-a-kind. Talent like yours comes around once in a lifetime" Looking back today, the "new generation" of recording artists don't have the soul of Gordon's pinky. Long live Gordon Lightfoot & his music!!

Tom - my kids have always known about Lightfoot and my adoration of him. They learned to recognize his songs on the radio and to be quiet. My son has gone on a different musical journey but Lisa is now 12 and is loving Lightfoot! She thoroughly enjoyed herself at Mariposa and may come to Massey in May. She walks around with lyric sheets to her fave songs and sings along when the record is on. Her faves are Rainy Day People, IYCRMM, Sundown, Yarmouth Castle and Alberta Bound. She has excellent taste!

Hey, you guys,
This is a really BEAUTIFUL thread. Straight from the heart. I want to contribute, but I think you've just about said it all. I know that we can all get pretty silly here at times, but what you three have just shown is that underneath it all, we are passionate, sincere and fiercely loyal in our love and admiration for Gord, not only for his work, but for the man himself and the great gift he has given us.
BRAVO TO YOU, Frank, Char and Tom!
Stay loose, eh?

sticky winds of winter

If you go into the forest
Gaze up through the trees

You can understand
What makes the forest
Greet the man
Like a mother's only
child ..."

I guess that I don't think that Gord is for everyone. Some people just have a different "taste" in music, and some unfortunate few don't really care for music at all. It's almost as if we have an individual rhythm, and it is a rhythm that Gord speaks to. In the content of his lyrics, in the timbre of his voice, in the tempo of his rhythm, and/or in the instrumental choices in his songs.
Listening to my new tape of ODR recently, I was remembering my college days in the mid '70's. I had a small circle of friends--about 5 or 6 of us--that liked to come to my place to do what lots of college kids did in those days. And I had the best stereo system. Well, I was hooked on Gord, and I picked the music (my place, you know), and pretty soon they were all hooked, too. There were many nights when we all shared lots of Gord's music very loud, in a companionable silence recognizing that all the conversation we needed was coming from the speakers. Comments were reserved for the few momentw between songs or record changes. I guess that my point is that I was lucky to find several others who could enjoy GL as I did, and I kind of miss that.
Well, sorry to digress to something unrelated, maybe, but this site helped me remember those times, in that here we have others who are lucky enough to have been exposed to and to appreciate the very beautiful GL.

I agree with Jay . . . that Gord must not be for everyone. (I can't imagine not liking his music, but then I'm biased.) I have a terrific circle of friends, ages ranging from 6 yrs to mid sixties and much as we are devoted to each other, our musical tastes are entirely different. It's sad that none of them share my ardent love for Gord's work. But that's okay, too- there's one lady who is a die-hard Neil Diamond fan (That old "has-been", I tell her). And there's the guy who thinks Bob Dylan hung the moon (When is he going to sing without the clothes
pen on his nose? I ask him) They both gang up on me and tell me that "Gord's songs are soooo monotonous". All in fun, you realize. Oh well, to each his/her own. I guess that's why I enjoy this group - we connect!
