Which Early Morning Rain?

Just wondering ... especially after the topic on Wherefore and Why - which is your favourite version of Early Morning Rain? I had never heard the original version (never knew it existed - sorry, but there's not much available in the UK! Not unless you know what you're looking for!) until a year or so ago, and grew up with the version on Gord's Gold - but the version on the Reno DVD ... I thought I knew this song, this song has meant so much to me for so many years, but has never made me cry ... not until now. I don't know what happened, but something did, and this is the only version for me now. The original of anything is often the best, but sometimes things just keep on getting better ...

I love it anytime he does it, it's one of my all time favorites, but the original is quite haunting..good stuff. He changed the lyrics a bit on GG.

I'm actually very fond of the Gord's Gold version. His voice has this awesome deepness you don't see on any other versions.

I'm fond of it too. It was the first version I ever heard. It was a great time for him to remake that song..it was quite a few years before I heard the original, even longer before it became my favorite.

Alright, you've got me - I love them all, every one! I'm just splitting hairs here! The Gord's Gold version was the first one I heard, and loved, for many years. There's a depth there, yes, vocally, and more. And it's partly in the tempo, isn't it? It just keeps getting slower ... and the Live in Reno - the slowest, and there's something there - depth, emotional depth that just got me the first time I heard it, very unexpectedly, because I thought I knew this song already, since twenty years! But I'm listening to the original now on repeat play while I write - and how could I ever live without this? It's never a matter of "either/or" completely, is it?

like I said, I like the original. Original recordings just get to me. The beat is perfect and so is Lightfoot's voice.

I used to like the Gord's Gold version the best, but later changed my mind to the original. I find he has a really raw expressiveness to his voice on that early 1966 version. I can almost "be" on the runway.

I believe this is one of his greatest songs. Its simple structure and beautiful melody coupled with its driving rhythm, make it a great folk song. The song also sets a time and a place that is long past now. Just the mention of the "big 707 set to go" gives me the chills.

That's the thing about Lightfoot's music, isn't it? The ever changing favorite. And there's always something more. Lot of depth and dimension and no way to pick just one. Something for every season, every mood. Part of the reason I never get bored with this man's music. It's part of the allure, the hook that won't release you...

Both recordings of Early Morning Rain arte good, but I like the original more. His voice and the guitar sound the best.
I actually had the GG version of "Wherefore" before I got the original, and maybe that's why I like that version so much. To me, that one is the original.
