Hi to all,
first: English is not my first language
second: I like Gordon Lightfoot and want to know more about him and his native Country Canada.
I have been in Canada for three times and will be back this July (Ontario).
Please tell me where I can find more about Gordons bio.
It would be nice to learn more about the members here - please give me a little help.
My favorite song of Gordon is "Did she mention my name".
I hope to hear from you,
with kind regards,
RCI

Welcome! - you can go to the HOME page (top of this page in orange letters-click on HOME)on this site and see many sections to find info about Lightfoot.
Another excellent site is www.lightfoot.ca
There are also LINKS at these sites to others about Lightfoot.

whilst drafting and researching this response I see that the Char_ming board moderator has stolen some of my thunder but nevertheless I will say my piece:-
Welcome Klaus-Peter presumably from Germany judging from the @t-online.de on your email address.
If so where??
My own limited German experience concerns a brief visit many moons ago to Hamburg en route for Copenhagen when as a poor student with two other french students we felt hungry and we decided that the place for a cheap meal would be the main Hamburg station buffet but how were we to know that there a "hamburger steak" was an expensive cut??!!
I digress strange that you asked primarily for Gord's bio details since to get here you must have been looking at the entry page to this site and must have missed the biography link to the following page:- http://www.corfid.com/gl/biography.htm
This site (corfid) is run/owned incidentally by a near neighbour of yours young Florian in Vienna (also in the old world!!)
If you want even more information including tv and radio appearances and comprehensive tour details visit the other information site at:- http://www.lightfoot.ca
you also declared that you "want to know more about ... his native Country Canada."
Getting to know Gordon's songs will give you a wonderful insight to how he sees his country he is truly a Painter Passing Through!!
for information about Canada
try http://www.canada.com
which has links to national newspapers etc
but basically Canada is a large country
I know having driven from Montreal to Vancouver and returned by train
Ah yes you probably have already heard about the Canadian Railroad
"an iron road running from the sea to the sea "
approx 4500 miles say 7250 kilometres
from various sources including:- http://gocanada.about.com/cs/general...nadianquiz.htm
You also asked about this board's members i wanted to refer you to a previous topic "where is everybody from" at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000883.html
This was recently added to at that URL that I found by searching for that exact topic title but strangely that link now takes you to a default page here that claims you are lost patent rubbish!!!But I did find the topic page as archived by the wonderful wayback machine at:- http://www.wayback.notlong.com
in the topic's early days in 2002 so have devised a notlong link:- http://everybody.notlong.com
That reminds me I have looked in vain on this site for a succinct summary listing all those readers who bit the bullet and have registered as members. Sure you can click on any member's profile link and see whatever they have publicly revealed about themselves here. But nowhere have I been able to find what must surely exist a complete database of members. If either Charlene or Florian is reading this can such a list be compiled and stored as a web page or section on this site please
now can I ask one question myself:-
have you any ideas on why Gordon is/was so obviously popular in Germany I say obviously because of the availabity of the early Lightfoot United Artists albums on the three wonderful Bear Family reissues on CD and the fact that my Lightfoot CD collection (mainly UK purchased) includes several made and printed in Germany examples

Hi John,
such a long answer I hadn't expected ! Wow !
Thank you for all the links and hints - I'm overwhelmed.
Yes, you found out I'm from Germany. I live in a little village near Berlin in the state of Brandenburg.
First time I heard Gordon Lightfoot was nearly 30 years ago or somewhat. We could hear at this time Radio Canada International in German - and they played songs of Lightfoot. But it wasn't easy to find out more about this famous singer in the former GDR(Eastern Germany).Today I have a computer and a searching machine - so I discovered this great site.
First time I have been in Canada in 1991 (Quebec and Ontario).
Second time I crossed Canada by train from Nova Scotia to British Columbia.
Third time I have been in the Yukon and Alaska and Ontario too.
And in July I will be in Ontario and US again.
I have heard old tapes from RCI these days and I have heard Lightfoot again - the next step was going to the computer and looking for more and: here I am.
"now can I ask one question myself:-
have you any ideas on why Gordon is/was so obviously popular in Germany?"
I can't answer this question - but may be I find out, John.
You gave me a lot of work - thank you ones again.
Take care,
Klaus

OK Klaus I'll gert this in befotre Auburn Annie, for another view of Canada you could do worse than read about it at:- http://www.weeklystandard.com/Conten...5/349tpijp.asp
a long US satirical look at "The Great White Waste of Time"
samples
"hobbies include wearing flannel, obsessing over American hegemony, exporting deadly Mad Cow disease and even deadlier Gordon Lightfoot and Nickelback albums"
"These days, Canadian publications are chockablock with surveys showing that Canadians see themselves as something akin to a superior race"
"this is actually pretty small beer, compared with a new Canadian government-funded study called the North American Opiate Medication Initiative"
also there is a reference to

and a visit to http://www.canadianalternative.com

Dear John,
thank you for the interesting links. It reminds me a little bit to the movie "Canadian Bacon" of Michael Moore with Alan Alda and John Candy. Do you know this movie ? The most Germans didn't understand the deeper sense of it - but I did because I have been in Canada and a little bit in US.
I will compare Canada and US this summer. So I will see Ontario,Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois,Missouri and Indiana.
By the way...I ordered my first Gordon Lightfoot CD this weekend - looking forward to it !
Take care,
Klaus

Hopefully and being as he is in the manufacturing country Klaus ordered the German Bear Fanmily Lightfoot/The Way I Feel double CD
so that he could experience the initial richness of Gord's first two "original" albums before moving on to the next double Did She Mention My Name/Back Here On Earth
and then acquiring the essential Live album Sunday Concert Plus
getting these three each a bargain at only 15.34 Euros(whatever they are when they are at home!!!)each has the double advantage of two nice booklets and a total of six bonus tracks then moving smartly on to 1970's IYCRMM etc etc Or he might be advised to get "Harmony" early on to see where Gord is at nowadays.
Just my 2 cents worth

Well All Right! that will give you the "bare" first four albums as per the first two Bear Family albums I displayed above but excluding one bonus track the "New York remake" of "Spin Spin"
Just make sure your next purchase is your native German Sunday Concert Plus though far better value
Oh well sorry Klaus I saw your plan too late

It is great Klaus, you will enjoy! I have that one and disc two and three at work and play them everyday. When you receive it please post your opinion.
The Sunday Concert that John advised is another great pick, of course I might be prejudice I like them all.
enjoy.

Hi Brink and John,
Thank you for your kindness mates !
I will tell you of course my opinion about the songs. But I have to wait I think nearly 14 days. Oh - I'm looking forward to that.
And then, mates you may recommend another CD to me, ok ?
By the way: are you celebrating St. Patrick's Day overthere ( March 17 ) ?
There are more questions about Gordon - but will ask them next weekend...
until then - take care,
Klaus
