Strangest Place to Hear GL Songs???

Okay, I know I'm new here, but has anyone else had similar experiences? Take for instance about a half hour ago when I was getting some lunch down in Penn Station (yes, in NYC)... there was a female folk musician down there playing "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" (pretty baddly, I might add). Now, I've worked above Penn Station for 3 years and I've NEVER heard anyone down there playing GL before. (Okay, I did hear that travesty of a pop remake of "If You Could Read My Mind" a year or two ago in the Penn Station KMart, but that's not quite the same.)

So here's the question -- what is the weirdest place/situation in which you've heard GL songs? (Or am I the only one having these experiences?)

I was lucky enough to see Gord perform in Melbourne in the mid seventies in a tin shed we called "Festival Hall". Its the only time he has been to Australia, which is probably understandable.

Ron, where abouts in Melbourne are you?. I'm up in Preston. Do you think GL can fill the tennis center or Colonial these days?

I actually heard Race Among The Ruins playing on 3AK overnight a year or so ago. I thought that was pretty weird!

I was down in Cornwall, on the s-w coast
of England last summer and was rummaging in a junk shop - dusty books and things - when suddenly I heard a familiar sound. Considering this is the UK where we are sadly in neglect of Lightfoot music, I
jumped up, scaring the life out of an old gentleman standing close to me. 'Sundown' was coming from the radio in the shoeshop next door! But it wasnt Gord. It was some rap version. But it was a Gordon Lightfoot song. That's about the weirdest place I have ever heard my hero or his music.

Well, I guess it wasn't unusual to hear Gord at the Canadian Pavilion at Disney World, but what surprised me was that it was a Muzak version of "Early Mornin' Rain" from the overhead speakers, while they used an excerpt of Stan Rogers' "The Bluenose"(?) in the video presentation. I thought it might be the other way around - but then I am slightly biased! No offense to Stan Rogers!

Gitargrl, I dig strolling thru a Walmart or Target here in Michigan where they usually play soft rock stations overhead. Once in a while I catch Gordon's voice wafting down around my ears while I'm looking at underwear or toys for my 2yr old son, Grant. My first response is to look up, searching for the closest speaker 30 feet above on the ceiling. Then I race over in between the aisles to shield out other noises and stand there under the speaker. People must go by thinking I'm a little 'out there,' not looking at anything in particular and periodically staring at the ceiling. I wonder what the chance is that someone observed this behavior, paused long enough to acknowledge that Gordon was singing from above and also stood there to absorb a little tranquility amongst the underwear and socks?

Yes, Shadow, I can relate. One of the grocery stores I frequent has somebody in charge of the music that I strongly suspect is a fan, too. I've never been in any public place that played so much Lightfoot regularly! The pet food aisle is the best place in that store...least noisy with a speaker directly overhead. I may have to get a dog to justify the time I spend there! I did get "discovered" there by one of the managers one day. He was going down the aisle to the back of the store and as he passed me with a knowing smile he said, "Great, isn't he?" I was way too embarrassed to respond.

Last week while I was waiting in an office to make a presentation to the Board of Education I heard Carefree Highway over the sound system. Gord's version not Muzak! At first I thought I was just hearing Gord in my own head (like I always do) but when I leaned out into the hallway - yep - there it was - Carefree Highway!

The biggest problem for me when confronted with a GL tune in an unexpected place is that I always start to sing or hum along. That can be quite embarrassing.

I can too relate with shadow. There are many times I'll be in the grocery store or elsewhere and hear Gord. I always ask my wife "Tell me who sings this." It drives her crazy cause she knows that the only time I'll do that is when it is Gord. I can always pick out his tunes whether it is the actual song or that cheesy elevator music.

Strangest place? How about before a KISS concert? My brother and I saw KISS here in Phoenix at the Veterans Memorial Colesium in '90. We hadn't been there long and there were a lot of people. Music started coming over the speakers,you know pre-microphone test music to keep people occupied. Well 1st thing out of the speakers was SUNDOWN! Oh,man did they boo! Well I'm outta time here at the library so off to Alberta I go!:d

I was grocery shopping two days ago. Strolling along pushing a shopping cart when I hear a musak tune that sounds vaguely familiar. I had to really listen for a minute to figure out it was a badly done instrumental version of Rainy Day People. It was painful to listen to. Lots of "twinkly" piano and strings. The arranger of that sucker should be tied down and forced to listen to it for three or four hours straight.
