Peter and I were so very thrilled and grateful to you guys for taking the long trip to get to the theater! It was one of the true highlights of this great weekend to meet you both. I only wish I had had the opportunity to spend more time with you on Saturday! I now we are all going to have blast in Toronto!
Allecia emailed me last night to tell me that this event was tremendously succesful in that it raised funds for cancer research and provided hope and support for the courageous people fighting this disease and their families/friends. It may be that we raise a little at a time butin the aggragate we will get there. I have never played a more important show or one that was nearer to my heart and I know Peter feels the same way.
On a personal note Brian, I believe God sends us things at certain times that help give us some comfort in our lives and help us to cope with whatever it is we just must cope with.
I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that what transpires on Friday/Saturday nights at 9:00 in all it's zaniness has been and remains a special and peaceful place to set for a few hours with friends. Having one of our bud's from the Chat room at the show was special because I know all of the gang form the chat were really pulling for us!

All this talk aboat cancer fund raising brought back happy memories of the many years I served as the "honorary" (oh do shut up Sydney hooligan person) ^Treasurer of my local branch of the UK's Cancer Research Campaign.(at the time there were, inexplicably two such organisations in the UK the other being the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. Our CRC Comittee raised around £2000 a year, mostly from the annual "flag-day" collections.and we were always on the look out for new events to put on.One that we used to thoroughly enjoy and reaped in regularly large amounts from was an "Auction of Promises" and in case this is something Peter's sister and organising partner are unaware of I will describe it in general detail.
We booked a hall capable of seating say 600 people and then contacted local people and businesses we knew (or thought) might be generous requesting the donation of items that we could auction.
Typically this included restaurant dinner vouchers. the occasional plesasure sight-seeing flight if we found anybody owning an aeroplane, cakes, vacation vouchers , a thorough plumbing or heating service and usually a local farmer could be persuaded to donate a ton of "well-rotted manure"!!
In fact just aboat anything is suitable including

the proverbial kitchen fitment!!
We would then engage the free services of a local auctioneer (not necessarily from Arkansas) and after providing refreshments let the bidding begin (ideally on say 100 lots).
I thoroughly recommend this fund-raising event and, Peter, should your sister need any further details I will put on my thinking cap (it is now the best part of seven years since I was last involved in one.

Your charitable endeavours are remarkably giving. You and the others are to be applauded indeed , as Char put it.
One song and writer you mentioned in the event set-list was of special interest to me. John Hartford's "Gentle On My Mind".
I agree it is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard, too. Did you know that while of course most of us remember Glen Campbell's cover of it that was a chart-topper cross-over country hit into pop.
What I thought might be interesting though, was that it may not be known widely that Hartford wrote many more of Campbell's string of similar hits. I believe relatively few were
recorded by Hartford; many more penned.
Interesting though is for reasons I have never tried to research on the 'net, or in the library is that Hartford stoppped writing (and recording too) that particular "easy-listening" style of country-folk-contemporary such as GOMM. He had a remarkably pleasasnt and listenable voice that Lightfoot fans would take to right away; I did.
Oddly, after writing a string of hit-driven
albums, maybe more like a few anyway, he changed labels from Warner-Bros Reprise (I believe) to what I think was his own label (......Fish). Flying Fish, I think. He also dramatically changed his style to a "wacky" version of bluegrass which I enjoy in general, but this was a little fringe odd to my taste.
I always have loved GL's ODR album, reportedly recorded in or around Nashville and also emplying bluegrass luminaries as studio musician's. I read it was recorded in a barn as well. Of course post-prcoessing was done back presumably at a sound-studio house and engineered to couple with some of the most beautiful string arrangements and instrumental tracks I have heaard on any of GL's albums I have heard.
Favorite songs from ODR that I love include "That Same Old Obsession" , "Lazy Morning" and "It's worth Believin' " . What a great album, and every song is memorable, a characteristic of Gord's that among all the best singer-songwiters' work I am aware of is a relatively rare occurence; but not for Gord.

HI Steve,
I agree with you about "Gentle on my Mind". it is a beautiful song. Another great song by JH was "natural to be Gone". Glen used to do that one too on this show. If you you go to "Apple ITUNES" there is a great version of that song featuring Bela Fleck on Banjo.
