Hi Just picked off a song from Kazaa from Gordon Lightfoot, the user titled it North Ontario, he does the say the word often enough in the song. Tried looking in Song Index, can't find it. Sounds like it is early 60's Lightfoot, anyone recognize this?

Would that be the song "Cabaret"?

Definitely "Cabaret" from "Summer Side of Life".

yes, that song is the ONLY recording of Gordon actually cracking open a beer and drinking one. You can hear it plain as day.

Did you think that Gord was using a lighter?
If so, you're not the ony one who thought that, or so I've read at the news group.

(the above, loosely translated means yes, Gord was having a beer. i was wrong, you were right.)

Listen again, James. It's the sound of a pop top being pulled from a can, someone drinking, then "Ahhhhhhhh".

How much did Derek pay you to make you say these things?!

So now that the beer theory has been accepted, any thoughts as to what brand it might have been? And would the can now be a collector's item? And if so, how would one verify it? (No, I'm not headed to Sotheby's with a can from the side of the road.)

the beer theory has once again been quashed! fairly reliable sources have it that it's Rick Haynes opening a can of Fancy Feast for Daylight Kitty!

Whatever it is, at least it wasn't somebody GOING to the can. (Although that may have come a short time after and wasn't recorded)

The sound effects on Caberet has been addressed over at alt.music.lightfoot a number of times. Someone that was there at the recording session has told us that it was a Bud.

No one is supposed to say, explicitly or otherwise, that Rick Haynes likes cats.

It was probably a beer from Elsinore brewery.

The sound of the beer being opened at the AHHHHH sound being made was put there by accident by the sound tech's friend who came in at the wrong time and didn't realize that they were still recording. I guess the sound tech forgot or wasn't paying attention and it ended up on the first recording. Gord loved the effect and thought it was rather funny and actually, yes this is true, has the guy's name listed in the credits of that album. His name is Rich Fortier and it is under "special effects".

Before you all go and find the album cover, I'm only joking.

I have to diagree with you here. Gord's voice has a very distinctive sound. I think it's him saying, "Ahhhhh". He's doing it with a Canadian accent.

My financial transactions are strictly confidential, but I suspect James is really enjoying his new Ferrari...

James,
You were NOT suggesting that he might have an affinity for our feline friends. Whew!!! That's a BIG relief!!! I was afraid that the straw boss might bust into this message board and smash heads together or something. Maybe he hates cats, or maybe he doesn't, but even talking about it is highly risky.

Rick is misquoted on that one all the time. He didn't say he liked cats. He used a 5-letter synonym.
