It's great that Lightfoot's music may be exposed to a new group of listeners, but unless they pursue the songwriter, they are left with a very tepid "cover". IMHO

I would have to disagree. Paul Weller himself is a legend in his own right. If he were to do an exact cover of Gord's song, it would sound awful. As it stands, he added his own sound to a familiar song and produced a lovely cover. Like I said, 'It's very Weller.'

As to the question 'Why bother?' Simple really, Paul wanted to pay tribute to another songwriter he would consider as one of the greats and that is enough reason to bother, especially when you're in a position to do this.

He didn't make the song any better, or any worse. He just made it different. Which, personally, I think is always nice to hear Gord's songs come from another direction. Just like the Gord tribute albums - I think they're great

PS - Sheryl, I'm glad you finally got a listen to it. Tis all good...

At last, after trying to pick up Paul Weller's version of EMR on my 'dial up' and could not past the picture of PW, nothing on audio apart from Loading 358% I have just heard it on my son's broadband. I think he does a pretty good version.
