The Wall Street Journal (July 20, page W11) has an interesting article about the 40th anniversary of the Detroit riots. I have the paper but don't have any online article access.
Article doesn't mention "Black Day in July" but analyzes that the riots essentially destroyed the Motown music industry.
Certainly it was a topical song that Gord has not performed in years. But the song is a fairly accurate historical account and the melody and tempo does communicate a tension that I think everyone felt.
If someone has access to the Wall Street Journal, it might be worth posting. Thanks.
