The Wall Street Journal (July 20, page W11) has an interesting article about the 40th anniversary of the Detroit riots. I have the paper but don't have any online article access.

Article doesn't mention "Black Day in July" but analyzes that the riots essentially destroyed the Motown music industry.

Certainly it was a topical song that Gord has not performed in years. But the song is a fairly accurate historical account and the melody and tempo does communicate a tension that I think everyone felt.

If someone has access to the Wall Street Journal, it might be worth posting. Thanks.

You know I often think about how it was banned by most US stations but what's kind of interesting about it is if you lived anywhere it was US by the Canadian border you could hear it.

I'm not trying to make light of a rather tragic situation that affected many US cities let alone the fact Martin L. King was killed about the time of the song being released but it's kind of interesting in a way.
