I have to think about this one too, but here are a few thoughts on this very special album to me.

I too find "Now and Then" one of Gord's most remarkable songs for imagery, lyrics, strong voice, and one those grow on you more melodies every time you listen to it.

I also find Cherokee Bend to be a heartfelt song, if memory serves loosely based on Hal Boorland's "Light in the Forest" book.

The Soul Is the Rock is one of the most metaphorical and complex songs GL has written IMHO, and I think it reflects what one can only guess was during a very introspective time for Gord when he wrote it;soul searching.

Contrasted by the beautifully simple and HAPPY Rainbow Trout.

W/O meaning to comment on every one, I'd add Bend in the Water to be simple and Fun. Its one of the most uplifting of Gord's songs I am aware of.

One more: Cold On the Shoulder; I think its one of Gord's more thoughtful songs full of allegory and other forms of metaphor that, without overthinking it, is clip-clop western fun, but upon closer inspection I believe is meant to convey a multitude of complex gifts of wisdom from GL to us.

Thanks Daylight Matty for the topic, and apologies for substituting my thoughts on this very special album to me, in lieu of an ordering of songs I must think on. I seriously doubt if anyone is holding there breath on that.

I just walked in the door from work, went and checked my mail (the snail variety): and guess what? I just received Cold on the Shoulder... about 5 minutes ago!!

Looking forward to giving my list once I get a chance to give it a good listen this weekend.

Missed this the first time around. Great topic.

1. Now And Then
2. Slide On Over
3. The Soul Is The Rock
4. Rainy Day People
5. Bells Of The Evening
6. Cherokee Bend
7. All The Lovely Ladies
8. Fine As Fine Can Be
9. Bend In The Water
10.Rainbow Trout
11.Cold On The Shoulder
12.A Tree Too Weak To Stand

This was extremely hard. I don't have a lot of favorites on this album. "Now and Then" is my fave hands down and "A Tree" is definitely my least fave, but the other 10 songs are all kind of even. This is probably the hardest album for me to rank best to worst.

I am very pleased to see how many here agree with my asessment of "Now And Then", one of my permanent top ten GL songs. I have been very lucky over the last few days to hear a very good and rare live recording dating back to 1975
Other than that I know a number of people are opposed to the idea that Rainbow Trout is a great song.
I note that Jennifer never returned with her listing??

Oops - busted! :D LOL. Yes, it appears I did forget to return my list, didn't I? So here it goes!

1 - COTS
2 - Rainy Day People
3 - Now and Then
4 - All the Lovely Ladies
5 - Slide on Over
6 - Bells of the Evening
7 - Bend in the Water
8 - A Tree too Weak to Stand
9 - Cherokee Bend
10- Fine as Fine can Be
11- The Soul is the Rock
12- Rainbow Trout

Hard to put them in order when they are all pretty darn good. For a while this was one my least listened to Lightfoot discs but it has grown on me. Bend in the Water is a fun song. And Gordons voice is incredibly smooth on Cold on the Shoulder. Now and Then is just great. Slide on Over is another great tune whose lyrics are reminiscent of The Who's Squeezebox (to me anyhow.) And I can't listen to Rainy Day People without singing along especially the part about "high steppin' strutters who land in the gutters". For some reason even though this is a "rainy day" song, it actually lifts my spirits quite a bit.
