Cleveland Concert 10/17/99

A Class Act.....
A damp and chilly night, beckoning of what are things soon to come in the form of weather for the south shore of Lake Erie, made it an even more intimate setting for another Gordon Lightfoot concert at the Palace Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio.
The crowd was the usual mixed bag, everything from searching teenagers, old time fans in their 40's, lovers, and even six nuns.
It was a honor as well as a pleasure to bump into Barry Harvey (Lightfoots manager) in the lobby before the show. Barry mentioned how well GL loves Clevland, the new CD set is doing very well, and how GL loves touring again and is very relaxed.
I have been to over 30 of his concerts and by far this one was the best! His relaxed style made you feel at ease. I thought I saw and heard everything, but even GL surprised me with some of the songs performed. The list is below.
If GL is performing near you, go see him, there is no one better....

Gold, I'll Do Anything* (Shadows), Uncle Toad, Beautiful, Sea of Tranquility*, Forgive Me Lord, Sundown, Carefree Highway, Don Quixote, Shadows, Same Old Obsession* (Obsession was a shocker and he sounded Great!), Boat House, Edmund Fitzgerald, Never To Close* (This site song of the month), Waiting For You, Restless, I'll Prove My Love, Blackberry Wine*, Painter Passing Through, Cherokee Bend, Make Way For The Lady, Early Morning Rain, Song For A Winter's Night (written in Cleveland in the middle of a Summer Thunderstorm), Baby Step Back, Candadian Railroad Trilogy.
It was a Classy Performance by a Class Act...

Thanks for the fantastic review.

I am happy to see that Gordon Lightfoot performs *Never Too Close* and *That Same Old Obsession*.

On the downside, you have just made my wait for the Toronto-concerts in November even harder

Kudos to Wes's comments on the Cleveland show,I was also there, saw the 6 nun's and witnessed the best show I have ever seen Gordon perform,I've been to about 12 shows and this was the best!Gordon really seemed to enjoy himself.He and the band just "nailed" song after song and Gordon seemed like he was really relaxed and having fun.The topper for me was he signed my Songbook hardback!

Great review! The Indiana show was the 25th time I've seen Gordon perform and the best. During intermission I requested Same Old Obsession (a request I've made 20 of the 25 times) and was SO HAPPY when he sang it. Did the same songs, not in the same order, but also did Heaven Don't Deserve Me.
Still feeling good from this concert, probably will for awhile.

You hit the review of the recent GL concert in Cleveland right on the head! I had the privelege of sitting behind those nuns, and what a night it was! GL was so much in focus, and so on the money, that for several of his songs I actually closed my eyes, and could swear the CD player was on! This was unfortunately only the second time I had the opportunity to hear GL live. But I assure you it won't be the last! I guess we all have our own favorite songs, but without a doubt, my two from that nights performance were "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and "Beautiful". And I am also a re-confirmed lover of "Canadian Railroad Trilogy". Talk about music that transcends all generations. The crowd included everyone from 8 to 80 - a tribute to a man who captures the hearts and soles of many a generation. And cudos to Terry on lead guitar - you were as good that Sunday night in Cleveland as you were on any album. Gordon, I only hope you're around for another 60 years!
