Got the call last week. Would you like to do sound for Gordon Lightfoot at the Performing Arts Centre?
Me : Hell Yeah!!!
I grew up listening to Lightfoot....his songs were all over the radio dial. I have always loved his music but I have never seen him in concert before. He is getting up there in age so I thought I gotta see him!
Well he didn't disappoint. What a pro. What a disciplined band! Soundcheck was very lengthy....went from 4 -5:30. Gordon would call out a tune, then immediately count it in and the band was always, always right there. Sometimes he made a small signal and the band would stop on a dime....he would ask for some adjustment to the sound or to the way somebody played something and then 1 second later count in and off they went again. No time wasted at all.
He played most of his big hits....there would not have been enough time in the evening for them all.
If You Could Read My Mind, Carefree Highway, Sundown...too many to name. When he played The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald the place erupted. Something about that song has always moved me, and sure enough, I had a tear in my eye hearing him sing it. His voice was quite frail, but the sheer strength of the songs carried the day.
His guitar playing was razor sharp though and so was the band.
Just as he was introducing the last song of the night, his 12 string (the same one in the pic) slipped off his strap and crashed to the floor. I saw a big chunk of the back splinter off that old Gibson....a damn shame.
It was a long day for me....I was there from morning to almost midnight, but I'm so glad i can file this one away in the memory banks!
Yes, a chunk of the guitar's back about the size of my forearm was laying on the stage by his feet.

Re: 12 string Gibson damaged onstage
At this stage having to deal with such a traumatic experience; that would be a horror story for Gordon Lightfoot.
Those guitars are his babies.
Over the years I've seen him go through broken string episodes on stage and he always just geared in there and went straight to work and changed the broken string and all the while entertained his audience in the professional manner he has always done, but this...I'm feeling the pain.
Just reading "chunk of the back splinter off that old Gibson," "chunk of the guitar's back about the size of my forearm was laying on the stage at my feet."
Just to difficult for me to process on this particular day.
But he'll be there tomorrow night for his scheduled concert and the show will go on in the very same professional manner that he's always done, and it will be done in his fashion.

Re: 12 string Gibson damaged onstage
I believe there are two of those Gibsons. One he capos on the 2nd fret for the Wreck and most other 12-string songs. The other is capoed on the 3rd fret and used for Canadian Railroad Trilogy and Early Morning Rain. I think those are the only two songs the capo 3 guitar is used for. (I have seen them both on stage at the same time.)
And if I'm not mistaken, neither of them is the guitar pictured on the Sundown cover. That guitar was stolen many years ago.
Folks with much more information than I have will hopefully chime in here.

Re: 12 string Gibson damaged onstage
From reading the rest of the posts on the forum that this story came from, it sounds like the guitar lost just the one big piece. Probably easily repaired. Gord likely has a go-to guitar tech/repair person who will be getting a call.

Re: 12 string Gibson damaged onstage
I think the 3rd- Capo songs on the 12 string are Canadian Railroad Trilogy, Early Morning Rain and Ring Neck Loon.
The 3rd- Capo 6-string songs are: Old Dan's Records, Cold on the Shoulder, and Much to My Surprise.

oh..probably because they are right off the camera.. i usually label them then re-size them.. hmm... might take time to load because of that and you don't see anything.. several posts above this are photos...I think 6 with 5 or 6 photos in each...

Re: MISSISSAUGA,Ont.Nov.10-2017-VIDEOS/setlist-12 string Gibson damaged onstage
Great pics and vids, as always, Char. Thanks!
JJ, you spent some time compiling that Capo-3rd fret-List. Bravo.
Seeing that chunk out of that old B-45 gave me a sharp pain. But it doesn't surprise me one bit that Gord just picked it up, showed the audience the damage and just forged ahead. I'd expect nothing less.
Here's a lengthy but interesting article I just came across -
https://spinditty.com/artists-bands/...d-Songwritting
Sorry I didn't get to see GL and the guys more this year (only 2 shows) but 2018 is coming soon and I'm looking forward to seeing a new list of shows.
Cheers to all -
Melissa
