TV series "Ghost Ships of the Great Lakes"
Here in Australia at 9.30pm on Sundays, the National Geographic pay-TV channel is screening "Ghost Ships of the Great Lakes". I imagine the Edmund Fitzgerald will be featured soon. Here is this week's review in Melbourne newspaper The Age on Jan25:
"The Great Lakes of North America are a graveyard for some 8,000 ships and as many as 50,000 sailors. This captivating documentary follows researchers as they set about finding two wrecks missing for more than a century. The first is L R Doty, which sank in Lake Michigan in 1898, taking 11 crew members with her. The breakthrough comes in an overlooked account of the sinking by one Frances Browne, a cook on the sailing ship Olive Jeanette, which the Doty was towing. Following Browne's clues, divers find the Doty sitting eerily upright in 100 metres of water. The researchers' next task is to find the wreck of Olive Jeanette, which was lost in Lake Superior seven years later - and to see whether a skull trawled up nearby might be that of Browne herself. Fascinating, haunting stuff."
