Local musicians join icons for a secret recording session of "Me and Bobby McGee"

Music legends Kris Kristofferson and Gordon Lightfoot joined Ronnie “The Hawk” Hawkins at Hawkstone Manor, Hawkins’ home on Stoney Lake in the Kawarthas, for a no-longer-secret recording session of Kristofferson’s classic tune “Me and Bobby McGee”.

Other musicians — including some well-known local performers — were also there, including Robin Hawkins (Ronnie’s son), Leah Hawkins (Ronnie’s daughter), Ryan and Sam Weber (The Weber Brothers), James McKenty (The Spades), Steve Kendry (The Spoons), Melissa Payne, Greg Keelor (Blue Rodeo), Theresa Mackenzie, Buzz Thompson, as well as members of The Sadies according to reports on social media.

Local chef Eric Mckibbon cooked for the musicians according to his Facebook post:

“What a pleasure to cook for Kris Kristofferson, Gordon Lightfoot, and the Hawk on Stony Lake with dinner music by members of Blue Rodeo, The Sadies, the Spades, and the lovely Melissa Ann Payne,” he writes.

Ronnie’s daughter Leah posted some photos and Melissa Payne posted a brief video on Instagram from the two-day recording session at Hawkstone Studios (see below).

That Magical Session On Stoney Lake With Ronnie Hawkins, Gordon Lightfoot & Kris Kristofferson

By all accounts, it was a magical couple of days in early May on Stoney Lake near Peterborough that no one who was there will ever forget.

Music icons Ronnie "The Hawk" Hawkins, Gordon Lightfoot and Kris Kristofferson gathered at The Hawk's sprawling Hawkstone Manor Estate overlooking majestic Stoney Lake in the Kawarthas for a secret recording session in the Hawkstone studio—the specific details of which no one will divulge yet.

Many local musicians—including the Weber Brothers, James McKenty from The Spades, Melissa Payne, Karl "Kawartha Karl" Lawson and more—were also there, along with The Hawk's kids Robin and Leah, and some members of the Sadies and Blue Rodeo.

"We were fortunate enough to be part of a historical moment," Sam Weber, one of the hired session musicians, tells PTBOCanada, adding "We were asked to keep what went on pretty much under wraps until further notice."

What we do know is that a special song was recorded.

"3 Pals who happen to be Legends!!! Lightfoot Hawkins and Kristofferson!! What a song they recorded, last 2 days!! Can't disclose what CLASSIC HIT it is. All in good time!!!," Leah Hawk, The Hawk's daughter, said on a Facebook post.

Imagine being a fly on the wall for this recording session with these legends The Hawk, Kristofferson and Lightfoot...

Melissa Payne had this to say to PTBOCanada about being there: "It was an honour and a privilege to watch these three legends not only immersed in one another's company but to watch them come so Alive with their shared passion for the music."

Kawartha Karl, who is good friends with The Hawk, even had the chance to have his guitar autographed by Gordon Lightfoot...

We can hardly wait to see the result of this music collaboration.

Have just clicked on the photo above of the 3 crooners and was taken to a whole raft of fascinating pictures, a lot of newspaper clippings from "Char archive" most, if not all, concerning Gordon's career. Very interesting.

On May 2, Kris flew to Toronto to visit his old friend Ronnie Hawkins. Ronnie had laid down a track of "Me & Bobby McGee." With a house full of friends, Kris sang the second verse in Ronnie's living room. Gordon Lightfoot sang the last two verses and everyone at the party joined along on the ending chorus. Later, Willie Nelson sang the last verse on his bus and was added to the video. James McKenty is the music engineer and producer of the track. Lisa Kristofferson video taped it and Jon Grimson edited this video. It's available for purchase now on iTunes.
