His father was Red Shea, the man who wielded the axe behind our seminal Canadian folk singers: Gordon Lightfoot and Ian and Sylvia.

So it’s little wonder that Scott Shea’s debut album already sounds like the kind of stuff Canadian classics are made of.

It’s literally in his DNA, and he’s coming to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church on April 18 to share it with our community.

The songs on Let it Storm, which releases next month, feel instantly familiar. Their combination of memorable hooks and rugged authenticity have been the hallmarks of Canadian radio mainstays for decades.

It’s a stunningly-crafted, mature collection of numbers about maturity itself – specifically, about arriving at a place of contentment in life, learning to live with one’s “issues,” valuing close relationships with loved ones and searching for spiritual meaning in life.

From the title track – a triumphant celebration of hard-won self-acceptance – to the tear-inducing “When She Prays,” about Scott seeing his father in his daughter and the wistful “Beverly Lane,” with its clever turn of phrase about driving a woman “to the point where a woman walks away,” Scott takes listeners on an emotional journey, his versatile voice delivering the rough-hewn lines of the title track as easily as it soars to mournful high notes on “Any Day Now.”

The album was recorded in Austin, TX and produced by Gordie Johnson of Big Sugar. The almost orchestral arrangements feature keyboard by Willie Nelson’s sister, Bobbie Nelson, and drums from Nelson’s nephew, Freddie Fletcher.

Scott wrote the album on the vintage Martin D-28 guitar that his father played on all the early Lightfoot recordings.

It may come as a surprise to some to know that Red Shea played almost no direct role in his son’s musical development.

Scott’s early talent as a songwriter was recognized when a song he wrote as a teenager was featured on a compilation from the Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Recordings (FACTOR).

As a young adult, he and his brother Brett partnered in the successful duo The Shaes and provided a song for the soundtrack of the film Universal Soldier II: Brothers in Arms. The pair also opened shows for Iris Dement, Blue Rodeo and Big Sugar, and released an album called Zero to One.

Now, at last, Red Shea’s son has an album to call his own. And it’s everything you’d expect from the offspring of Canadian folk royalty.

The doors of the show at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church open at 7 p.m., and tickets are available for $7 at the door.

Shea finds his own voice on stage

Life has taken Scott Shea on a world trip of adventure.
When singer-songwriter Scott Shea went on a spiritual trip to the other side of the globe, he got more than he bargained for.

“I broke my foot in Thailand in the jungle. I had to walk for three days with a busted foot with bamboo crutches and I had blisters under my arms,” Shea recalled. “I got heat stroke in India and almost died. I got shot at in Cambodia. There was tons of stuff that happened.”

Despite all the trouble, Shea’s eight-month global journey had a profound impact on his life.

“It was life changing. I felt really moved,” he said. “It gave me a different handle for living in Canada and what potentials we have.”

In the years following Shea has been realizing his potential as a musician.

On Friday (April 10), Shea will perform at Char’s Landing. His stop in Port Alberni is part of a tour that will see Shea play to crowds in British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.

“Port Alberni, I am excited,” he said. “I am really excited. I can’t wait to get out there.”

Shea grew up in Aurora, Ont., and became involved in music at an early age thanks in part to his father, Red Shea, who was an influential guitarist and is best known for his work with Gordon Lightfoot and Ian Tyson.

“They used to call me Hollywood back in high school,” Shea said. “I was always singing and humming and making up little tunes and limericks all the time. It just seemed to be what I loved to do.”

Shea said despite his father’s reputation, he wanted to discover the guitar on his own.

“I wanted my dad to teach me, but I didn’t,” he said. “I didn’t like the idea of my dad teaching me. I liked the idea of me doing it on my own, which is kind of the way he has always been.”

As a teenager, Shea met and fell in love with a girl while skiing in Vermont. The two quickly became an item and he moved to Goshen, N.Y. to live with her.

“I ended up doing a bunch of landscaping with her father and then on the weekends we would all go down to Ocean Grove and Asbury Park [N.J.].”

It was during those trips to the Garden State that Shea would bring his guitar and busk along the boardwalks.

“It was most cover tunes ... but I was playing some of my original stuff,” he said. “You’re kind of young and naïve thinking that you’re going to get discovered when you’re out there jamming away.”

After nearly a year of living in New York the two broke up and Shea returned to Canada, where he formed a band called The Sheas with his brother.

“My dad taught my brother and he was so good that having him on board just made me look better,” he said.

Shea said that his father, who died in 2008, never pressured him into music and actually discouraged him from pursing a career in the industry.

“As a matter of fact it was the complete opposite. He loves music but he hated the music business. He couldn’t stand it. He didn’t like the way it was run and he thought it was very dishonest,” Shea said.

“He didn’t put a lot of emphasis on us to do music. He knew that is what I wanted to do but he didn’t go out of his way to help in any way.”

During The Sheas’ life span they would release an album called Zero to One and opened for Big Sugar and Blue Rodeo.

“You know, of course, as brothers, things kind of went sour and my wife got pregnant and I had to find a real job,” he said.

After taking time off from the music industry to work and travel the world, Shea decided to get back to performing live shows and doing what he loves.

“Writing songs is just something I do,” Shea said. “I can’t think of anything else I want to do.”

Last year Shea released his first solo record, Let it Storm, which was recorded at Arlyn Studios in Texas and was produced by Gordie Johnson.

He said the record has a Gordon Lightfoot feel to it simply because of his father’s influence on him.

“I have that Lightfoot sound because I know my dad was responsible for a lot of it. I think that being his son I think that is in me and I can’t help it,” Shea said. “The last thing I want to do is be my father.”

Very nice find Char I must say firstly that to me Scott looks remarkably like Red
I did some googling and found that the venue he is playing at next Friday is your very own converted church1!!

Another google result was to
"Char's Landing - Yuri's Night"
"
Yuri’s Night is a global celebration of humanity’s past, present, and future in space. Yuri’s Night parties and events are held around the world every April in commemoration of Yuri Gagarin becoming the first human to venture into space on April 12, 1961, and the inaugural launch of the first Space Shuttle on April 12, 1981.
Yet another result was a web page for reverbnation
where I found links to Scott's videos including
http://www.reverbnation.com/artist/video/13523114
which my computer/internet connection was disinclined to play without excessive buffering
nor do I know how to embed its player on corfid. But I then found that Scott has a YouTube channel and here is Scott's own "Taking You Home"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdL91lFyl9Q
On my setup after that ended it ran straight into
"
Wildfire and the Wind"
followed by
Scott Shea, Gordie Johnson, writing and recording songs
songs!
in which Scott very briefly talks about Red
Both very enjoyable
Kim if you are reading this tell Gordon, because we are now enured to hearing him complain about not having the time or inclination to write any more songs himself. Here is an ideal solution!!:-
Gord has previously recorded a few songs by Red's brother Les , so why not use some of the songs being written by Les's nephew Scott?

Sorry everybody but I'm on a roll now
I have spent some time on Scott's own website finding video and audio links and in particular the blurb on the following page
http://www.scottsheasongs.com/about-scott-shea/

Shea’s debut solo album, Let it Storm (2014), distills the richness of his own take on life. A ten-song suite of mood and texture, Let It Storm grounds the listener in lyric landscapes of emotions, and the poetry of the deeply felt—and keenly observed—nuances of everyday living. The album was developed during a reflective period following his father’s death and composed on the same guitar his father used in all of the early Lightfoot hits (If You Could Read My Mind, Carefree Highway, etc), and pays homage to the foundational essences of songwriting..........

Scott’s songs have been categorized as folk/roots/Americana with the emphasis on folk/roots and compared to an unplugged Fleetwood Mac or Crowded House, lyrically.
With the blood of his father running through his veins, it’s not surprising that instrumentally he has been compared to Gordon Lightfoot. That being said, it is hard to compare him to anyone, Scott Shea’s music remains resolutely his own

On at least one linked website's page all the songs on the album are listed and can be played or bought.

Scott is at Cameron House on Queen St West in Toronto again on June 18th.

I'm in the process of trying to get a ticket.

He was there recently but it was sold out by the time I received the information.

Will stay posted.

Hi Friends.

Sorry to take so long getting back on this one. Lots of stuff happening on the Summer Side Of Life these days.

A Scott Shea night is was indeed.

Getting tickets for events these days is just too much of a hassle for me to deal with so the best piece of advice I picked up on was just to go there early and take a chance which I did and it worked out fine.

This was one event I really wanted to see and was hoping as well to maybe bump into someone I knew there.

As has happened with me on many occasions in the past concerning anything connected to Gordon Lightfoot's music, telepathic stuff keeps propping up.

While walking along Queen St West on my way to Cameron House I happen to glance in a windowpane of an eating establishment and sitting at a table there is my close friend and big time Gordon Lightfoot, Red Shea aficionado, Kenyon Wallace.

Kenyon was having dinner with a friend and did not know anything about the Scott Shea gig.

There are six million people in Toronto my friends and this happened.

He saw me and ran out to greet me. There were hugs extended and we all ended up at Cameron House to see Scott Shea perform.

The show was brilliant!

Scott played a six string acoustic Gibson which produced a very rich bottom end sound and sang his own material which just swept me off the map. I honestly couldn't pin it down. It was just loaded with intricate chord progressions and throat lumping lyrics.

He had a fantastic lead guitar player who delivered the "Shea" style licks on a seasoned Martin. I'm not sure which model it was as I get lost after they pass D18.

His bass player was versatile and quite selective in his style. He bowed as well as playing individual string notes.

The drummer was Glenn Milchem from the very popular group "Blue Rodeo" and with that combination of musicians the audience in Cameron House that night sure got their money's worth.

An interesting note to mention is that Scott announced that they were off shortly to New York to do a show in Central Park with Carole King.

Getting onto a gig like that would require a certain caliber of musical accomplishment.

I did get the opportunity to meet Scott and found him to be a very dignified gentleman. We had a great chat.

He thanked us for coming and I mentioned there would be something on Corfid regarding the gig and he said he would watch for it.
