Re: Bells of the Evening - Uncle Putin
Yes, worth repeating for sure.
Always had a special liking for this song and now having heard this rendition, the like has blossomed into love.
Been listening to it over and over so many times that the bowl of soup I had ready for lunch has now gone cold.
Things like this happen when you've been caught by the minstrel's misfortune.
Thank you JJ for the great work you do here.
RJ.

Re: Bells of the Evening - Uncle Putin
Dear friends.
That experience last weekend in Orillia seems to keep manifesting in my brain as there were so many wonderful moments that are now unfolding and I want to share this one especially.
When Karen Hilfman Millson, the former minister of Gord's hometown church came to the stage and talked about Gord, the interviews she did with him; how one could see the inspirations that brought out some of the treasured moments in his songs that talked about in his early life living in Orillia, a host of thoughts came back to me.
Marian from the Mountains and I took the more scenic route from Toronto town and as we began to approach Orillia the autumn tree colors shone out between the steeples of the many churches that stand tall in Orillia.
The thought came to me and I mentioned to Mar that I could see exactly now how Gord would come to write a song about church bells and how the sounds of the resonating of them could inspire a song like "Bells of the Evening."
Now I can't get the song out of my head, but then again, why would I want to? Such a beautiful and powerful song with the utmost of simplicity and effectiveness.

Ron! I want to hear stories about you and Paul and if you played and what you got up to Saturday night with those guitars or if you saw Even Steven, etc
if we hadn't left our show so late at night then I would have tried to catch them… other acts ended too early… no time for chatter really, eh
i especially love the first time i saw the church on the West St hill …probably 1970… i used to play at the hockey arena in behind there, which is being demolished right now… i tried to take my kid in last year but it was condemned and locked up and land for sale
i was talking to Steve Eyers about Gord's piano songs… i quickly concluded that i think he is a guitar and bass and harmony guy, and nice lead singer too…i moved onto another subject, lol …i think Kenyon and I may have barraged him a bit with stuff, ha
i love that song

Re: Bells of the Evening - Uncle Putin
Yes, there was a lot happening and almost impossible to take it all in because of the overlapping etc., but I guess we have to make the best of what we have while it's there.
After we got checked into our hotel etc., Paul Bartlett and I connected at the "Brownstone Pub" where there was an open mike and we had a ball there. The bartender was also the sound guy and a good one let me say. He was most accommodating and gave us a really nice even balance on our instruments.
I think we ended up doing probably a forty five minute set. We were having such a great time up there.
Paul as you probably know was trained by Red Shea as a lead guitar player so for me to have that calibre of accompaniment backing me up was a most joyous feeling.
I guess also being there in Gord's hometown and having the privilege of playing his songs on a live stage in front of an appreciative audience would sow an incentive to strut your stuff best you can. I'm still high from that wonderful experience.
Yes, Steve is a very nice man. I was fortunate to meet him backstage and have a short discussion. Very talented entertainer and very present on stage.
Sandman is calling.

JJ,
If there was a trove of treasure there's one alive on your You Tube channel. Beautiful sweet Christmas Season sound on "Bells." Oh, those wonderful Massey moments, great memories.

Re: Bells of the Evening - Uncle Putin
thx, ron… too kind… that was a spontaneous self jam, where i places the iPhone beside my keys speaker (built on, good for stage monitor) and tried some sounds… Brian had it on the list as a possible next cross border collab… and that's how it found its way onto the keys for about 90 seconds that cold day… what i ended up doing was trying that glockenspiel sound during instrumental break in Pony Man… i think it's suitable …very "childish" music box tone… i was going to add that during kenyon's solo at the Opera House but i've never tried it live and didnt want to throw him off… i know Scott would have grinned if we looked at each other while i did it, lol … just single notes… they all seem to work… AE D A C# D E A … kind of like the little sonar notes during the Wreck … i think i'm off topic… umm, i no longer have that old piano…it is missed, lots
