Default 10th Anniv.Lightfoot celebrations @ Hugh's Room,TOronto-3rd of 4 nites

Here's a re-cap, pics and links to videos. Ya shoulda been there!

THE WAY WE FEEL
10th Anniversary Celebration of Gordon Lightfoot @ Hugh’s Room, Toronto Jan.19-22, 2012
It’s hard to believe that the first of these amazing shows held at Hugh’s Room was in early 2003! The time has gone so fast, the shows are as fresh as the first year and the talent onstage has been varied, surprising and familiar all at the same time. I love seeing the ‘regulars’ I’ve come to love but also look forward to the ‘new’ talent that comes to pay homage to The Man.

This year I attended nites 3 and 4 of 4 only but oh my they were spectacular! Jory has taken the shows he co-founded with Aengus Finnan and worked miracles with scheduling, songs and the talent presented. The first 5 years were a joint effort between the two of them and since Aengus moved on to other pursuits 5 years ago Jory has lovingly respected their vision and presented the music of Gordon Lightfoot with passion and professionalism.
Each of the nights this year had a slight change in the artists who would perform. I knew I had to be there on Saturday and Sunday nites tho. They would be the most varied of the nites and oh what fabulous nites they were. I took quite a few videos with a new camera. Seeing them makes me wish I had all 10 years on video! Some of the performers comments/stories/memories told onstage are also included in the videos I have linked. All the performers have websites etc. and videos online.

Saturday January 21, 2012 (nite 3 of 4)
Toronto has been experiencing a very mild winter with very little snow. We get a few inches and it melts the next day. There have been a few bone chilling days with high winds but the weekend was pretty mild with a small snowfall that quickly melted. The streets were not brown and gritty.
My daughter Lisa and I headed to the city by train and checked into the hotel mid-afternoon. A quick subway ride and we were walking into Hugh’s well ahead of show-time. It’s nice to be there when it’s quiet and a few of the performers are doing sound checks and we can say HI to them without a crowd and noise around. They are all truly lovely people.
In no time it seemed the show was ready to start and Jory was introducing David Newland, the wonderfully talented emcee for the past 10 years who also sings a tune to open the tribute. The house band would comprise David Matheson (piano, guitar, vocals), David Woodhead (bass guitar), Christine Bougie (pedal steel & percussion) and Jason Fowler (guitars and vocals)

1.DAVID NEWLAND (and his more than adorable uke) – DID SHE MENTION MY NAME – so sweet! http://www.davidnewland.com/ David has a new CD being released in a couple of weeks! http://www.rootsmusic.ca/about/ David always brings and keeps the shows running smoothly with his introductions full of knowledge and stories about the performers, and a bit of humour thrown in for good measure.

2.DAVID MATHESON – DRIFTERS and DON’T BEAT ME DOWN. – Dave tours with Ron Sexsmith who did “Drifters” on the Lightfoot tribute cd “Beautiful”. He also sang “Don’t Beat Me Down” with Jory Nash singing backup. http://www.davidmatheson.ca/ David is so multi-talented it’s hard to keep track of everything he does onstage. The addition of his piano playing to the Lightfoot tunes would be lovely to hear at a Lightfoot concert @ Massey Hall the way Lightfoot once did way back when.
3.KEN WHITELEY – COLD ON THE SHOULDER and THE LONG RIVER. With backup singers Suzie Vinnick and Annabelle Chvostek Ken performed a soulful, gospel tinged version of “The Long River”. http://www.kenwhiteley.com/ Ken Whiteley is a Canadian roots music legend. His musical journey has taken him from jug band, folk and swing to blues, gospel and children's music. Among numerous accolades, he has been awarded a Canadian Folk Music Award, Genie Award for Best Original Song in a Canadian film, Lifetime Achievement recognition from the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals and Mariposa Folk Festival. He has also been nominated for 7 Juno awards and 14 Maple Blues Awards. Ken’s live performances showcase his outstanding musicianship on guitars and mandolin, award winning original songs and his powerful vocals, called "...a cross between Pete Seeger and Tony Bennett on 11!" Whether leading his own group, solo or collaborating with peers at blues, folk, children’s festivals and concerts of all sizes, his “...deep knowledge and infectious passion” guarantee good times for all. As a producer of over 125 recording projects, Ken’s productions have garnered 10 Canadian Gold and Platinum records, 4 American Gold records, 22 Juno and 2 Grammy nominations, and sold over 8 million copies.
4.ANNABELLE CHVOSTEK – EARLY MORNING RAIN. – she had seen Lightfoot on TV when he ventured to the Occupy Toronto site to visit his youngest daughter Meredith who was part of the group living there. He was asked by a reporter which of his songs would best represent the “Occupy” movement. His reply was RESTLESS. Annabelle had never heard the tune but learned it to perform for us. Annabelle has a rich, emotional voice perfectly suited for Lightfoot tunes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annabelle_Chvostek

5.AENGUS FINNAN – MIGUEL and the very appropriate THE WAY I FEEL. Having Aengus back onstage was a thrill for everyone who has previously attended the shows in the first 5 years. He sounded wonderful. While he has been in attendance and even sang with the group in the FINALE a couple of times over the years he has not had his own slot in the line-up. This year he was where he belongs and all was right with the Lightfoot celebrations once again. IMHO. It was heart warming to hear people come and tell him how happy they were to see him onstage again and how much they loved his singing and his voice. I myself could not stop from giving him a big kiss on the forehead! His shy smile and thankyou’s led me to hope and believe that he will keep his music as more of a focus in his life and we will be able to look forward to seeing him onstage more often and perhaps hear of some new tunes written by this uber talent. A GOOGLE search produces videos, pictures and info about Aengus. and
6.JORY NASH – CANADIAN RAILROAD TRILOGY and MOTHER OF A MINERS CHILD. – Jory says that every folkie has a train song and there are more train songs than trains but only one person has written one about the building of a railway. He had all of us riding the rails across Canada as he performed a very intense rendition of “CRT”. Jory had us laughing with his story of when he took a date to a Lightfoot concert and hoping to impress her he shouted out the name of her favourite song during a Lightfoot concert despite hating the yahoos who do that. Lightfoot acknowledged the dreaded shout-out, sang a few lines and Jory thought he had it made with the girl when she took his hand while they sat in the gallery of Massey Hall. She dumped his ass a week later. lol! He then sang my personal favourite of the Lightfoot tunes he does – “Mother of a Miners Child”. WOW. He had us spellbound. http://www.jorynash.com/bio.cfm His attention to detail makes these shows run smooth and turn into sold out events every year. And all of you know who else has that detail oriented perfectionist mindset too! – it’s why Lightfoot shows up at these shows when he can. His respect for the performers and the excellence which is apparent with everyone onstage has a lot to do with how Jory brings it all together.

7.JOHN MCDERMOTT – HOME FROM THE FOREST and THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW YOUR FACE. John has recorded “Home From the Forest” and “Song For A Winter’s Night” on his own albums and has great respect for Lightfoot. His own story of how he came to his musical career is quite a tale. John explains the connection between Lightfoot and “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McDermott_(singer) and http://johnmcdermott.com/
8.THE GOOD BROTHERS – REDWOOD HILL and ALBERTA BOUND. and a reading of the notes Lightfoot wrote back in 1970 in the Redwood Forest with The Good Brothers. (video) I’m sure they have performed this tune many more times than Lightfoot ever thought of doing it! And the same can be said of the 2nd tune they sang – “Alberta Bound” which of course had the audience singing along. http://www.thegoodbrothers.com/
9.JASON FOWLER – I’LL TAG ALONG and FINE AS FINE CAN BE. Jason is the musical director for John McDermott and a talented songwriter/singer with several of his own CD’s. He has the most eclectic collection of guitars I’ve ever seen. And he plays them beautifully. This year Jason did not tell his “boiler strings” story but had an equally compelling one of a guitar given to Lightfoot as a gift from Bob Dylan. Jason hadn’t realized that “Fine As Fine Can Be” was a song written for Lightfoot’s oldest daughter when she was a young girl. Having thought it was for a woman the song then took on a whole different meaning for him. Lori Cullen sang back up for Jason. http://www.jasonfowler.ca/fr_home.cfm

10.SUZIE VINNICK – BEND IN THE WATER and I’D DO IT AGAIN. Suzie, as always brings a sexy blues vibe with her sultry voice to the Lightfoot tunes and makes us hear them a whole new, exciting way. She’s a master guitarist and terrific songwriter as well. She just won 2 Maple Blues and 1 Folk Music award! She has won many awards, has been and is in a few groups and has recorded with them as well as Rick Fines, another artist at these shows over the years. http://www.suzievinnick.com/

11.CADENCE – THE WRECK OF THE EDMUND FITZGERALD and BOSS MAN. (David noted that it would take 4 men to follow Suzie!) 4 male vocalists that defy description. They sing and vocalize all instruments and sound effects that can possibly be imagined. They take ‘barbershop’ harmonies to another level and captivated Lightfoot a couple of years ago when he was in attendance and watched these 4 artists perform. http://www.cadence-unplugged.com/

12.LORI CULLEN – RAINY DAY PEOPLE and SONG FOR A WINTER’S NIGHT. Lori brings a jazz element to tunes you’d never think would support that genre. She does it subtly yet powerfully with a sweet voice that draws you in. http://loricullen.com/ Lori has recorded “Pussywillows-Cattails”, “Rainy Day People” and “Beautiful” on her own CD’s. Suzie Vinnick and Annabelle Chvostek sang back up with Lori.

13.LIAM TITCOMB – SUMMER SIDE OF LIFE and SUNDOWN. Liam is the son of Brent Titcomb-a long time folk artist starting back in the 60’s. LIAM has performed at the Lightfoot shows before and has matured into an artist comfortable onstage with his strong voice and guitar skills. He, like Jason worked at the music store that Lightfoot frequented, albeit at different times and met Lightfoot there many times over the period he was employed at Ring Music. http://www.liamtitcomb.com/ In 2009 Liam busked across Canada to raise funds for WarChild raising $50,000.00. http://www.warchild.ca/ He also does a fine cover of “Into The Mystic” one of my fave Van Morrison tunes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...v=fF3Is4UaHG4#!

14.VALDY – BITTER GREEN and PIDDLIN’ PETE and THAT’S WHAT YOU GET FOR LOVIN’ ME. Valdy recalled playing a Lightfoot tune back in the day at the 1968 Aldergrove Folk Festival in British Columbia – no rock songs allowed so he sang “Bitter Green.” (Valdy then wrote the tune “Play me a rock and roll tune”) The audience at Hugh’s sang along as Valdy strummed and danced onstage. “Piddlin’ Pete” was a Robert Service poem that Lightfoot put to music. Ken Whiteley said he heard Lightfoot do it in concert back in 1964. Valdy also sang “That’s What You Get For Lovin’ Me” which also turned into an audience sing along. A few years ago when a mini version of the Lightfoot tribute show went out west Lynn Miles performed “That’s What You Get For Lovin’ Me”…as a woman singing it took on a whole new vibe. http://www.valdy.com/

15.GROUP – FINALE – RICH MAN’S SPIRITUAL – A call/response version that is the culmination of a night of individual artists coming together onstage to perform the first song on side one of Lightfoot’s first album as suggested by Aengus Finnan when he and Jory Nash brainstormed about creating The Way We Feel – A Celebration of Gordon Lightfoot and his music more than 10 years ago. A perfect song indeed.
What a night…the 3rd of 4 nites brought some new artists to the stage and tunes not performed before at previous shows while the familiar faces and tunes were warmly welcomed once again. These events, after 10 years, are a testament to the respect everyone involved has for the Lightfoot body of work and The Man himself. He was missed this year while he was out on tour but I think he missed out on some truly memorable performances here at home in the city by the lake.

Saturday Jan.21,2012 pics - Char and VALDY...He was entering Hugh's while I was snapping a pic of the marquee.. A voice from behind me offered to take a pic of me with it - I knew before turning around it was VALDY - I'd recognize his voice anywhere! I said I'd rather a pic of HIM with it! He went one better and suggested Lisa take a pic of both of us and the marquee!

Char,

You mentioned above that you're fond of Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic". I am too and the best cover version I've seen was by Melbourne band Broderick Smith's Big Combo in the 1980s. Here is a live performance recorded for Australia-wide TV series "Rock Arena".

Jason and Jory are starting to look alike

I didn't get Jory's CRT... as it is I had to buy a 2nd battery pack, power it up, stick the original in the wall in the lobby of Hugh's to power it up, use the new one, then power it up too...it ran out just as the finale ended..lol I was also changing SD cards during the night. I had a new 32gb one I used on night 1 and loaded into the laptop, plus an 8gb and 2 2gb SD cards.. I was exhausted! not a lot of still pics cuz I videotaped everything.. lol...
fave 3? hmmmm. hard to do..I do LOVE Lori's rendition of Song For A Winter's Night...and Ken's "Long River"... Jory's "Mother of a Miner's Child", "Miguel" by Aengus, I can't pick just 3!! Annabelle was a nice addition to the lineup... Liam was awesome. It's all so fabulous every year, every night even... Gord sure missed out.lol

Such great talent being showcased...glad to hear you had so much fun.

How nice that your daughter Lisa shares in your passion for G.L.’s music; so many incredible memories for the two of you to look back on.

Thanks for all of the time you dedicated to putting everything up online.

thanks! It is very time consuming to do them but I do the recaps mostly to have something tangible to read years from now..I can look at pics, videos and read the reports and pretend I remember..lol
Lisa first saw Gordon perform when she was around 3 and even met him then! She enjoys his music and meeting him backstage too. We also love the artists at the trib shows-for their music, their dedication and their friendships. We're very lucky!
thanks for the comments...

lol, people dont realize the stress of battery and or tape (ie. capture space) running out ... plus people talking near the mic or butts settling in front of lens

i got 10 hour pack last year and it'a a relief somewhat...that's hilarious to think of you running to the outlet in the lobby, lol.... there should have been a documentary on your shooting this!

you didn't mention the challenges and time consumption in converting or compressing the results and then the uploading and all

BUT a few if us appreciate it...thanks, man....I'll check out the Titcomb footage

I am pretty openminded and love new arrangements of almost anything but am a big fan go the Long River and can't stomach Ken's take quite yet...but I guess if you are sitting right behind the keys and in the live vibe with a red wine, then I can see how it grabbed you

even the very best-est videos and audio don't do live club music proper justice

gawd - you should have seen me crawling amongst people and table legs..lol
good thing i didn't drink at all on the 2nd night. first night we were near the stairs at the entry area to the tall tables/chairs..@the knee wall there..they were great seats..
I loved Ken's rendition of Long River..both nights!
lol
it took days to write up the reports with links etc.,convert and load the videos and my usage with my provider went over limit by about 24 bucks..lol new plan starts next week..lol
i see lots of views but not many comments here or views at youtube..i do hope people are viewing the videos from the link here at least. they don't show up in the tally at youtube however. hard to keep track.

Hugh's room on Friday night was my xmas present - we sat right up next to the stage! I can't imagine the show being better than that, but then I see that Lori did Song for a Winter's night on her Qchord on the sat night. Well I'd a liked to have seen that. Bought her album too and love it. Anyway I'll not miss this show ever again. Loved CRT, ASTOUNDED by WofEF & could NOT believe the overall high quality of the show. Now that's the best $35 I ever made my husband pay for a show. He loved it too.
