It's on!! BBC 4 - Lightfoot 1972 show
Finally! I can't wait to see this, on BBC Four several times this coming week end:
A classic concert by Gordon Lightfoot from 1972, accompanied by Red Shea and Richard Haynes. They perform songs including Summer Side of Life, Saturday Clothes, That's What You Get For Loving Me, Affair on 8th Avenue, If I Could Read Your Mind, Steel Rail Blues, Ten Degrees and Getting Colder, Early Morning Rain, Me and Bobby McGee, Minstrel of the Dawn and Canadian Pacific Trilogy.

Re: It's on!! BBC 4 - Lightfoot 1972 show
Is this something that those of us in the US will be able to view?
Will it be archived for viewing at a later time?

Re: It's on!! BBC 4 - Lightfoot 1972 show
I hope some kind soul will put it on YouTube, it's a full hour show so it should be special.
I can kind of pick up the channel live on my TV but it is awakward to tape anything from BBC Four for me, dunno if I will be able to get a copy for myself even. I might just get the one live viewing tonight :-(

Re: It's on!! BBC 4 - Lightfoot 1972 show
Its 3:30 Toronto time and I just tried 'clicking' the 'Watch Live' link on the BBC Four Web site.
It said "Not Available In Your Area"
Any suggestions.
They have a FAQ area and there several ways to watch ...but I don't think I can do any.
Any help out there

You can't see it if you are not in that area of England..we can't get many of the U.S. stuff either..There's nothing you can do.
The 'signal' has been blocked.

Re: It's on!! BBC 4 - Lightfoot 1972 show
Don't intend to annoy all that couldn't see it, but it was pretty fantastic! He opened with "Summerside of life" with a different verse or two. "Farewell to Nova Scotia" was a surprise, and best of all, a sublime version of one of my favourites "Miguel" which tops the album version. "Nous Vivons Ensemble" and "Talking in Your Sleep" featured too. Great stuff!

Re: It's on!! BBC 4 - Lightfoot 1972 show
Spot on Dan, watched it last night, it is Saturday morning now 6.40 am, about to watch it again, I cannot understand how Gordon did not become a chart topping superstar here in the UK. A couple of his songs barely reached the top 40, unbelievable. But we do hear the occaisional song on BBC radio. There was also a film about Ron Sexsmith on before GL in which Gordon made a brief appearence backstage at Massey Hall. It was a good night on BBC 4 last night. I hope you guys get to see the Lightfoot concert, Gordon at the top of his game. Brilliant.

This is indeed fantastic news,
As I have reported earlier somehow and regrettably I missed seeing this live in 1972 and only have the BBC RadioTimes page plus two fair cassette tape recordings made for me by a friend of the "stomping" "Farewell To Nova Scotia" (a zillion times better than the comparatively pedestrian version on the La Cave bootleg from 1965) followed by a great spoken introduction to the sublime live Miguel in which Gord said something like "The road was ribbon of Moonlight from The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes" then something about a purple mOOr and an old inn dOOr?? but these were "of necessity" purely Monaural recordings that I will try to upload and make available ASAP."Of necessity" due to the use of a common monaural mains tape machine and Mono television transmission.
I think I am right in saying that back in about 1971/72 the Beeb was just getting around to experimental stereo radio transmisionsion using the new FM radio service for one channel and either AM radio or television audio for the other and that proper stereo television was still a decade or so away.
S o Jim Dan snd Al can you tell if the current repeat is in mono or stereo??
it is now 4:42 am ESTin our morning I will contact my family in Stockport later and try to persuade them to make a digital rcording to pass to me but if anyone has a DVR and can get a file to upload to http://vimeo.com (eitther complete or split if necessary) please do so as Youtube of course has the 10 minute limit although six parts will be much better than none!!

Re: It's on!! BBC 4 - Lightfoot 1972 show
I have recorded this on my "Digital Recorder" through which we get Digital TV through an aerial rather than through a Sky dish. I will try and record it on to a DVD, I have a DVD recorder. Which I now no longer use. If I am successful I will post it off to anyone who would trust me with their address.

Re: It's on!! BBC 4 - Lightfoot 1972 show
I sure hope and indeed I believe that we poor suffering fans will get to see this fantastic bit of footage along the way..some how. Another way of getting it is to have one of the participants ask for a copy. It alludes to that on their website.
So Gord or Rick or a Shea person, or someone who worked the show should be able to get it.
This is what did happened for the late Red Shea when he got a copy of the CBC '68 production at his request. His family were the ones that wanted it for posterity well before his unfortunate passing.
Red's wife and family may be very interested in having a copy of this broadcast as well.
And back to the age old question that has been talked about many many times. Gord should authorize the gathering of ALL his old footage from whereever and formally release a DVD with all of it on there. All in remastered...remixed...re everything.
You tell me how many would sell. .... enough I think.
I can only dream.

Re: It's on!! BBC 4 - Lightfoot 1972 show
Very interesting show and pretty long I must say he crammed in a lot. Including a different as Summer Side of Life with four verses. He also did a For Lovin' Me/ Did She Mention My Name medley. Lots of songs from the unreleased Summer Side of Life album.
I thought he looked a bit strange, very short and square looking. That just struck me!
For those of you who watched, I dont think Rick Haynes thought Gord's joke was very funny judging by his face afterwards.
Im going try and figure out how to tape the repeat on Monday.

Let me guess he introduced Rick as the father of Red's new son
see this "Lightfoot Groaners" thread on the old Newsgroup
that contains my own first ever internet posting from 1997

if your recording works, I, for one, would love a copy! It's so hard not to be able to see this in the states!

Re: It's on!! BBC 4 - Lightfoot 1972 show
The BBC website shows that the content can be downloaded but apparently only for those in the UK. If I were able to get the download I could do a screen capture of the performance and make it available. Anyone in the UK want to work with me on this project?
