Like I said before, I'm enjoying the laughs!
It's nice to have intelligent talk about
GL, but, a good chuckle now and then

Oh my!!! I used to feel so "high school" because my admiration for GL was more than just his music (but I do love his music) but now I don't feel so bad!!

Earlier this week I saw a prog on the box "Hollywood Greats" this weeks "great" was John Wayne. There were some shots of a young John Wayne, which reminded me very much of a young GL. Uncanny.

Yes, I too distinctly remember the first time I heard Gordon sing. I was listening to the FM radio in my parents' home (I was 17 yr. old) and I heard a wonderful ballad. But the radio host didn't come on at the finish of the song to say what or who. Instead probably a half dozen more songs were played (and there had been several--I didn't know how many-- before the song in question. So when the radio host finally started to rattle off the song titles and artists, I had to write ALL of them down and then count back to the one I was impressed with. And that song was "Don Quixote" by Gordon Lightfoot. It wasn't until a year later that I just happened to see the "Don Quiotte" album and bought it. And THEN it was almost another year after that before I was able to buy a record player so I could listen to that song again (strangely, I never heard it on the radio again since that one time.) Now, as for Mr. Lightfoot's looks--beautiful. I've drawn and painted him many times over the years. He is, quite simply, a very beautiful man.

Welcome, great story Carol. Most of the friends I have made here know DQ is not my favorite song - but whatever drew you into the music is great. I agree he is a beautiful man inside and out.

Carol - welcome! DQ is an amazing tune and it always leaves me gobsmacked that he remembers all those words...there's a lot of words in that song!
Like Brink says - he's beautiful inside and out...at least the parts the fans know about. If you can and would like to share I'd love to see some of your artwork...can't speak for anybody else but they can chime in if they do too.
There's a lot of many talented people here who have numerous ways to express their artistic sides - I appreciate all of them and their abilities so much.

BTW, in answer to Sir John Fowles' 6-year-old question, I think that it was Phil Ochs who wrote an article about GL and said that he looked like a Greek statue. The article had a strange tone--a bit of admiration and a bit of envy at the same time.

I'll have to go with "a" as well. During the Sundown time period, I don't think I've ever seen a better looking man. Looks, brilliant songwriter, singer, sensual, a regular romance novel hero. Have always had a weakness for a mans speaking voice...Gordon = perfect. I'm blushing...

I would have to agree. I bought the Sundown album and spent my freshman year of high school looking at that picture on the cover. The Don Quixote cover wasn't bad either! The bonus was the songs, and his voice, were fabulous. Or were the songs and his voice great and the bonus was he looked HOT?!

Have been going back and reading some of the old posts. I think it was Char that wrote about her attraction for Kris Kristofferson - yep, me too! And I was thinking about why I found men like Kristofferson, Gord, Leonard Cohen, attractive. I think part of what I like are the contradictions ("partly truth, partly fiction"). Rugged exterior, hard drinking, womanizing. Songs are perceptive, poetic, tender, humorous. With all the junk music around at the time, Gordon is putting out songs like "Christian Island" - not exactly the top 40 tune of the day and sooo much better, art. So is public image who they really are? Maybe in part, but there is always so much more. I think I'm rambling and not in a good way

i agree with this completely. well said. It was hard to "see" the drinking and womanizing when the songs touched the heart. We could see the tender man beneath all the public man and that guy was/is attractive. (upon re-reading, my post sounds odd.... so sorry.)

Years ago, after Sundown, there was an article published in People about Gord. I believe that is where the "lonely and womanless" comment came from that he apparently didn't care for. Anyway, I think it was in that article (or it might have been from Crawdaddy) where he commented that he wanted to "find a real fast woman and domesticate her" (I'm sure it was meant tongue in cheek). I remember thinking at the time, I'd like to find a real fast man and domesticate him

So I think that is part of the allure - you know this guy has the soul of a poet but is kind of wild. So what spells success more than taming him? Created nice things to day dream about almost 40 (?) years ago!
