J. Buffett comment on GL
Scroll about halfway down the page; "I wanted to sing and act like Gordon Lightfoot." (Jimmy Buffett on his Nashville days)

Would this one suffice MM??

Sherborne OLD Castle in my hometown in Dorset UK
Destroyed in the English Civil War and given to Mr Tobacco hisself Sir Walter
Rawliegh by Queen Elizabeth I. He then built a less drafty modern New Castle. Meanwhile much of the castles stonework was then nicked by the locals and
found its way into local houses!!

Re: J. Buffett comment on GL
I like Jimmy B - his music, his work ethic, his attitude towards life. Steve Kroft on CBS did an interview some years ago which was very enlightening about JB and how and why he does what he does. An update is posted here: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/...in647193.shtml
Excerpt:
Walk down any dock, or anywhere there are palm trees, a bar, or a jar for tips, and you can hear someone slurring his lyrics.
"There's some good ones and there's some really bad ones. I take it as the ultimate compliment," says Buffett. "It's an anthem of some sorts. I never wrote it in six minutes. It was just another song. Just another song going on the album, you know? That's the way I looked at it. And then, never in my wildest dream did I ever think it would do what it did. Never."
Those wild dreams may have been enough for anyone but Buffett. For him, it was just a beginning -- all of which makes you wonder, what drives Buffett?
"I can only say the first thing that pops into my mind is I remember, years ago, seeing kind of a has-been country singer working - when I first moved to Nashville - in a bar in a Holiday Inn," says Buffett.
"And it was obvious that it had been somebody that'd been there and come back down, and I never wanted to make that run back down. 'Remember me back in 1977? I had this one hit, "Margaritaville."' I did not want to be one of those people."
AND
The past year [2004] has been a whirlwind of success that started innocently enough when a friend, country music superstar Alan Jackson, asked Buffett for help recording a new song called "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere."
"I went in the studio, I literally was there about 20 minutes," recalls Buffett. "I sang for a total of 24 seconds on the record. And it became this huge hit."
Sounds like a man who just cannot believe his good fortune, but really is one who made his own luck, and works very hard to keep it up.

Re: J. Buffett comment on GL
I've heard and read JB comments on GL before...GL turns out to be well loved among many of my favorites -- Kris Kristofferson, Dylan, Fogelberg...
Going to a conference in Vegas in April and most definitely will mark time in Margaritaville! Turning my unfinished basement into similar themed space. But those Adirondack chairs are $425 a piece!

Re: J. Buffett comment on GL
A JB concert is one of the happiest experiences I've had at a live music event..it's a mindset that just takes over. His band/backup singers are fabulous and just put it all out there - I love it...
He's a great author as well.
JB's grandfather was a Canadian from Cape Breton and his fishing/boating life had a huge influence on JB.. I believe he has/had a place down east at one time..

Yes it was Love
Sherborne as a quiet off the beaten track town WAS pretty near to Heaven but as Gord was unlikely to ever sing nearer than 2500 miles away after a 30 year residence I left. and I have to say that it was possibly the best decision I ever made in my life because the UK National Health system completely failed to find the imminent danger of a heart attack from dangerously narrowed heart arteries a fact easily diagnosed once I got here resulting in my quintuple heart by pass in October 2000
To continue my piece on the two Sherborne Castles I have now found the photograph of them that I wanted to display again. It was in an earlier thread but was then linked to a copy on a now defunct free website I had set up

This shows a Hughes later McDonnell Douglas and now Boeing Apache helicopter, actually built under licence in Yeovil (just 6 miles to the west of Sherborne) by Agusta-Westland. I love this photo as it shows a great aerial view of the Old Castle ruins and also Raleigh's New Castle with the famous English Landscaper Capability Brown's artificial lake in between them.
Please note the shape of the New Castle I cannot prove this story but I once heard or read that Raleigh originally built it in the shape of an E in honour of his Queen (Elizabeth I) but after he sullied his standing with her by playing around (he married one of her ladies-in-waiting) he retaliated by adding an extension to make it into an H to honour Elizabeth's predecessor Henry the 7th
Of course Sherborne as befits my birthplace is a most beautiful old town,I could provide countless examples and have a webpage planned for an album of photographs but I will for now limit my enthusiasm to just one picture taken back in August
This old (16th century building) is at the top of Sherborne's main shopping street called "Cheap street" not because of the prices being charged but from an old English word meaning "market".For most of my time in Sherborne the ground floor was Stacey's the greengrocer . Now it is the office of one of the hordes of Estate Agents (realtors) who infest the town.
In my schooldays, however it was the convenience store run by Eddie Ansty, who use to sell the cheapest cigaretes (Woodbines) in tiny packs of just 2 I remember
Handy for impoverished schoolboys!!
Amongst Eddie's goods were durable products from The London Rubber Company. and he could often be heard asking a customer if he wanted "anything for the weekend sir?"
My best friend Russ got his ears cuffed once when he said "How's the rubber trade Eddie?"

thats cos JB was trying to write a GL type song when he wrote that one (or so the quote goes)...seems like a nice guy...i think he and Don Ho were separated at birth
UK was a lovely visit but i was glad to get back to some warmth and non-greasy food, lol
i spent my entire time mapping out castles in Scotland and Yorkshire area and journeyed towards them starting early each morn so see them in magic lighting hour...the anticipation was wonderful as the map would show i was gettign nearer and nearer one...many were amidst new developments but the few that were out in the middle of nowhere were the real gems...i must make an album of the photos of the 30 castles and abbeys (and golf clubhouses ) i tackled...looking forward to your site, JF
this was the Dumfries castle that I most admired....800 years old (rebuilt a few times of course) and complete with a moat and drawbridge
i got lost many times, especially when back in London, what a subway map!
ok, this thread is giving me All Creatures Great and Small withdrawal

Re: J. Buffett comment on GL
Kind of cool to hear artists commenting positively about each other.
It was surprising and neat to learn that JB was a buddy way back with Steve Goodman who I like almost as much as the Gord man.

Re: J. Buffett comment on GL
Oh, yeah. Buffett is on the cover of he second Steve Goodman album (billed as Marvin Gardens) and Goodman played on teh first several Buffet albums. A few of those contain Goodman songs.
Steve was slated to sing the national anthem for the first Cubs playoff game in 1984 but sadly died four days before the Cubs clinched the pennant. Jimmy filled in for him.
