Default The 12 Days of Lightfoot (need help)

if this has been done before please send me the link, if not this could be some group fun:

am trying to keep with the # of syllables of the original version (see bracketed note beside each line) so how about each who replies (if any, lol) fills in just one line and we'll somehow decide what to go with as final or just have several alternate versions...maybe even send an Xmas card with matching images to EMP? ...here goes:

"On the first day of Christmas, Gord Lightfoot sent to me":

A _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (7 syllables, this should be the best since it repeats every verse)
.
.
.

right up to the last day, ie:

"On the 12th day of Christmas, Gord Lightfoot sent to me":

twelve _ _ _ _ (4 syllables)

eleven _ _ _ _ (4 syllables)

ten _ _ _ _ (4 syllables)

nine _ _ _ _ (4 syllables)

eight _ _ _ _ (4 syllables)

seven _ _ _ _ (4 syllables)

six _ _ _ _ (4 syllables)

five _ _ _ (3 syllables, strrrretched out )

four _ _ _ (3 syllables)

three _ _ _ (3 syllables)

two _ _ _ (3 syllables)

and a _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (7 syllables)

I was thinking the repeat line could be "On the first day of Christmas, Gord Lightfoot sent to me a "BACK STA-AGE PASS TO MAS-SEY" (7 syllables) -get the idea?

sounds like a pretty cool gift but I bet someone can come up with an alternative

...one second thought, if any replying want to complete the whole song that's great also - there are so many creative folks here and this thread is not about rules even though i've replaced the dot dot dot guidelines with syllable blank blank blank guidelines, lol

On the first day of Christmas Gordon Lightfoot sent to me
ONE backstage pass to Massey
On the second day of Christmas Gordon Lightfoot sent to me
TWO hands to hold
And a backstage pass to Massey.

char, gee, i was leaning towards getting her a snowblower? what, not a good idea?

hey, love it mike, regardless of the syllable rule, lol! and was thinking i'd like 6 Martins but i think at least one got traded in

in the meantime i've been using these by default, many don't roll off of the tongue too well, need some better alliteration (ala, maids a milking, swans a swimming) :

Twelve lazy mornin's
Eleven pussy willows
Ten morning glories
Nine leaves of grass
Eight endless wires
Seven island sweets
Six minor ballads
Five knot-ty pines...

Four highway songs
Three freight trains
Two bitter greens
and his polka dotted underwear

i know, a bit of an anti-climatic ending for the guys here. lol

so how about his canary yellow canoe...or maybe a tree too weak to stand?

lol. well let's add 3 cheers for Pam! that is quite a wish list!

no need to be sorry, let's make the goal to not use anything i've put forth

ok, you have violated the syllable guideline/rule in every line except the 2nd, lol

if ya try sing those lines with your guitar, those words are quite a mouthful...i usually even struggle with three french hens

and the 3rd day is a separate (no pun intended) violation all together, lol

btw, let's hope Gord does not send anyone "7 lonely hours"...or any coal!

ps) anyone heard Norm MacDonald's 12 Days off his Ridiculous album? cute

and hard to remember after a few rum-nogs or glasses of Blackberry Wine...I'll find it!..!

OK here goes:-
"On the first day of Christmas, Gord Lightfoot sent to me":

one wish that I'll be the one
two cups of decaff coffee
three split bandages for a bad burn
four hours in the afternoon
five and dime new dress
six and twenty thousand tons of iron ore
seven sweet islands
Eight avenue affairs or something
Nine runways to fly from
Ten degrees (it should be warmer)
eleven is a good harmony
twelve hours eastwards
and a ring neck loon in a knotty pine tree

I think we've lost sight of the way the song is supposed to sound as if someone were to actually play it and sing it to sound like the original..we're not to just make a willy nilly list.....
..JJ has listed the syllables to follow as per the original song..

it's tougher to make the list following the syllable format than it seems ..

let's see how it goes..perhaps someone with a guitar and voice can then record it and pass it along to us here at corfid??

jj - [I]excellent game ! and I laughed out loud several times. This actually got me in the Holiday spirit too, Melissa and Podunk ! Good idea jj.
Say whats this falderall about no dots .....neener-neener, just dashes...... Rule Shmules ! I want an attorney ! ....lol j/k

jj, this really is a fun idea, I am hitting the side of my head with an empty diet pepsi can to make it think so I can come up with something within the rules...
hmmmm to fill in - and a _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (7 syllables), and it should be good enough to be repeatable. OK ....

OK- the ideal repeatable refrain you want ?

OK 'tseeer: I think I get it; try this; a cool 7 syllable repeatable refrain right ? How 'bout:
{given} 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
And a...T-sh-irt prin-ted Light-foot lol is that the way of it jj ?

given 1 2 3 4
2 engines o-n and that ? like that ?

and a 6-syllable - 'Ripped abs for the Ladies' oops er... I just noticed you want all 3 and 4 syllable lines except for 7 on the finalE - so we gotta scratch my ripped abs(shyeeaww)

ok - and line 8 - 4 syllable not including the starting word "eight' - aha -
eight bucks for the rent, - with rent pronounced as one syLLAble
or phonetic syllable interp: eight bucks for re-ent

steve, i think you've got it

now some of that is not rolling off the tongue too well (bucks for the rent or the tshirt line) but "2 engines o-n" is working good here!

not as easy as i thought or did i take all the easy to say lines/gifts?

i guess it could be only 1 day of Lightfoot this year...lol

btw, what gift is 4 hours in the afternoon, sir john? medic needed?
