The title says it all, doesn't it?
You can read more about it at my web site here:

listen to SHADOWS @
Amazon.com: A Hundred Miles Or More: Live From...
It's a bit too bluegrass for my liking..not a fan of bluegrass..
She has such a pretty voice tho.

I loved the job Alison and the group did on Shadows. Great solos by Jerry Douglas (dobro) and Tony Rice. There's lots of other Lightfoot material that could lend itself to their style.

Alison has such a great voice. Great musicians too but in my opinion the arrangement lacks something - sounds kind of choppy. Now, I wonder what 'Shadows' would sound like with Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin added? Bluegrass Alison's recent collaboration with Rock's Robert Plant on her release 'Raising Sand' was a tremendous success.

Re: New DVD from Alison Krauss features a Lightfoot song!
I just think it's wonderful that someone as successful and talented as Krauss would, from all the songs in the universe, select a Lightfoot tune.
I think it's safe to say...........we're not stupid people.

Why does Tony not sing any longer?

No, he hasn't sung in a number of years due to a throat problem.

Re: New DVD from Alison Krauss features a Lightfoot song!
fresh, nice and i think will really appeal to a Krauss fans and other listeners of that genre seeing as they most likely aren't at the disadvantage of knowing the Gord arrangement...it's quite plucky, eh...a sweet vocal performance
...i wouldn't mind a down tempo version, maybe even slower and sombre (those are my fave Krauss tunes) than Gord's...with that said, i think her playing the original version's keyboard part tastefully on violin would be really fine...anyhow, it's wonderful to login and find this...thanks for the scoop, val and for the video link, char...i'd like to have dan, ron and jerry in my kitchen for a session...i'd just listen, listen, listen
we should keep this thread near the top for a good while

Re: New DVD from Alison Krauss features a Lightfoot song!
Thanks Val!
I've always loved Alison's singing.
Great song performed quite well, although I'm with Yuri on this, the instrmentals were a bit, well not too well meshed together. But overall, I'd say it's well worth adding to "the library".
Many thanks for posting, Val.

Re: New DVD from Alison Krauss features a Lightfoot song!
Having written that song and watching others like this great singer Allison Krauss ( Angel Voice) recording it, must really be a thrill for the songwriter.
Allison will probably get this Lightfoot " GEM" heard a lot in Nashville, as well around the world to her fans.
I cant wait for her to be back at {The Grand Ole Opry}, one of these Saturday nights. And hopefully she will perform "Shadows" & mentioning the great songwriter poet that wrote it...
I like it when George Hamilton IV makes an Opry appearance, he usually does a Lightfoot tune, especially if he's hosting.

Re: New DVD from Alison Krauss features a Lightfoot song!
On Tony Rice - it's more some sort of neurological thing - a type of dystonia. He suddenly lost the ability to speak or sing. He's back to being able to speak and with therapy could sing again but he's said he's not concerned with that. Considers himself a picker rather than a singer. While I agree on the picker part I disagree on the singer part. I really like his singing. If you don't have Tony Rice Sings Gordon Lightfoot you owe it to yourself.
Another notable who experienced the sudden need to learn to speak again as an adult from this odd condition is Scott Adams who draws Dilbert. He also got over it.

Agree wholeheartedly! I've always loved Alison Krauss, and although this version is definitely different due to the bluegrass stylings, it's an outstanding job none the less.

Re: New DVD from Alison Krauss features a Lightfoot song!
bring this back to the top in case any bi-weekly lurkers missed this
also, if you enjoyed that you might enjoy this
a common thread here is jerry douglas (dobro wiz) but also, nanci performed 10 Degrees on an earlier, glorious CD...i didnt appreciate the follow up quite as much...it's great that the internet/youtube allows us to see and hear so many of these types of fine performances
