Why Do I Read Parade Magazine?
Every weekend when I get my paper out pops "Parade" magazine, as I'm sure it does for everyone else out there.
This week in the "personality parade" section :
Q I recently attended a concert by folk legend Gordon Lightfoot and was sad to see the change in his once ruggedly handsome appearance. What happened?-- Pat Barker, Lindenhurst, Ill.
A In 2002, Lightfoot suffered a ruptured aortic aneurysm, similar to the condition that killed actor John Ritter. He endured six weeks in a coma, four surgeries, and two years of extensive rehab. Now 69 and enjoying a busy schedule, Lightfoot is preparing a "live" CD based on his recent concerts in Toronto.
So in Somewhere USA Pat says to his wife "honey, do you remember that ruggedly handsome folk singer Gordon Lightfoot?"
"Of course dear, I've always loved that song about the boat, and the other one about the setting sun"
"Well he's playing in our town, let's attend the show."
After the show
"honey, that was a great evening, but it was sad to see the change in his ruggedly handsome appearance"
"I agree Pat, I was saddened too, how can we find out what happened to his ruggedly handsome appearance?
"Well dear I guess we could use that internet thing try to find out what happened to his ruggedly handsome appearance."
"You could Pat, but why don't you write to Parade magazine to find out the truth. I don't trust the internet."

Yep.....it's surprising how often you hear of people who don't own a mirror. I know that every time I look in mine, I find myself softly singing (to the melody of "That Same Old Obsession") :
'But a creature of evil has taken his place,
And I don't really care for this stranger's face'.
Maybe we could start a collection for the mirror-less : The campaign could be dubbed "Mirrors for Morons".

Re: Why Do I Read Parade Magazine?
After reading your post, RM, I wasn't sure what you meant regarding the song, so I went to the home page to read the lyrics. Still not quite sure what you're getting at concerning this song.
As for me, nothing will keep me separated from the love of God.
Yeah, some people need to take a look at themselves, but they are too far from the truth, so they can't/won't and they don't care.
That Same Old Obsession (Old Dan's Records) 3:42
I come to this garden
I come here to rest
Early each day upon risin'
I think of my lost love
From over the sea
And sometimes I've wondered
If she thinks of me
I long to recall every kiss, every kind word
I miss her so much I could die
But the creatures of evil
Have captured her heart
And that same old obsession
Still keeps us apart
There's peace in the garden
There's peace in the air
Peace in the sound of the river
There's peace in the meadow
The sun shines like gold
And if she were with me
There'd be peace in my soul
I long to return to the place, I remember
The taste of her lips close to mine
I could do much better
If I could be strong
Come into my garden
But leave me alone
I come to this garden
I come here to rest
Just as the night comes stealin'
Someone is weeping
She's calling my name
Deep in the garden
Deep in my brain
I long to recall every kiss, every kind word
I miss her so much I could die
But the creatures of evil
Have captured her heart
And that same old obsession
Still keeps us apart
But the creatures of evil
Have captured her heart
And that same old obsession
Still keeps us apart

Nothing. I just made up some lyrics. The point was that I usually find myself alarmed by my own reflection. I've had so many Lightfoot tunes running through my head trying to participate in geosteve's song quiz, and this one just came to mind.
I'm just amazed that some people expect "celebrities" to never age.

Like they say, when we're young, we make silly and ugly faces at the mirror. Starting in middle age, it's the mirror's turn.

Re: Why Do I Read Parade Magazine?
I was afraid that I had missed thearticle, but last night my sister told me that our Mom had seen the article and cut it out for me! Then a friend called and said she had seen it. (They were shocked to hear how sick our friend was, as I was when I first found out.)
It's good to know how much we all appreciate him, and I hope that he knows too!
