Re: Another golden voice silenced
I saw his photo last night on TV while channel surfing, I didn't stop to listen. It was probably about his death? Always sad when someone leaves this earth...

Maybe the forum should have an obits thread. Let's say "2008 notable passings". At the end of the year, it would be like a 'year in review'.

Re: Another golden voice silenced
I watched my local FOX news at 9pm last night and at the time they stated that he was in grave condition. I missed the 10:00 news report that he was gone. Truly a man with a remarkable gift from God. A voice that rivale,if not exceeded that of Enrico Caruso and other operatic greats.
Luciano Pavoratti shall never be forgotten, for unlike the time of Caruso,we have over 1/2 a century of performances to view and enjoy now and for generations to come. As Whoopi goldberg said on "The View" this morning:
"There's quite a chourus up there in heaven now". (Referring to Pavoratti & other great singers and musicians.) I know he's at rest.

I think, too, that he would make one hell of a choirmaster up there as well.

Re: Another golden voice silenced
Hate to think if we had an obits. thread back in 2003,there were nearly 50 people gone that year.
Anyhow,I'm checking out the DVD "Luciano Pavoratti:Gala Concert". Guess it's the best way to pay tribute to him. It mentions on the back his debut was in 1961 by the way. Wow...45 years (last year).

It really wasn't intended as a morbid thought. The more famous names will always be mentioned on the major news broadcasts/newspapers, but sometimes the lesser known go unmentioned. This forum has been very enlightening in passing along such names. So.....here's the idea......a 2 step process :
1) Reply to the appropriate thread (whatever it may be titled). Simply enter the person's name. (This would not be the place to convey remembrances, just a brief note of their reason to be notable). If you wish to have a discussion, then
2) Start a NEW thread.
Or vice-versa.
Summary would be the goal (I can already tell this isn't going to work). But if I'm still around, I'll try it next year.

The Academy Awards do a little summary every year B. Sometimes I forget that some of the people had died, nice little rememberance for them.

Re: Another golden voice silenced
I know Brink,I watch the Oscars and Emmys every year and those segments always place a sad kind of chill up my spine.
I'm sure it wasn't meant in a morbid sense RM,what I meant was it would have been a very long list. I know what you mean about lesser knowns being forgotten.
When Larry Hovis (Carter on "Hogan's Heroes" passed in 2003,the only news I saw was on ticker-scrawl on the bottom of the CNN screen. No mention of him on any newscasts at all, that I know of.
At those award shows, people give thunderous applause to the "biggies" and polite applause to the others. Everyone whos done something positive with their life deserves a standing O'!

I know EXACTLY what you mean there B. I remember the last time that I watched the Academy Awards, and about half wat through they showed the list of notable celebrity deaths, amongst them was the late Peter Cushing. As you said, there was thunderous applause for the ones that were always out there in the public eye, but as I remember it, the applause was light to polite when his picture was shown on the screen. I am of the opinion that no matter what, they should've all been given thunderous applause regardless.

Understood. But even if the list is 10,000 names, who cares ? Nothing is forever, and if the person was notable to you, pass it along. It could even be your Crazy Aunt or your Weird Uncle.....Paraphrasing Kristofferson..."their voices will be scattered by the swirling winds of time". The time is now.
