The Artists Who Wrote them or the others who also did them?

I probably choose Lighfoots versions of EMR.ROD, or For Lovin Me over the others who recorded them. Assuming more people know the other versions of those songs which they probably do.

Here are other examples.

Tim Harden:If I Were a Carpenter/Reason to Believe.

Other versions of the first 1 I mentioned were cover by Bobby Darin, The 4 Tops, and Bob Seigar.

I'm not too crazed by Darins version but like Hardins own version and the other 2.

Bonnie Dobson/Moring Dew.

Like her version. The Gratful Dead's version is OK. The other 2 I know of were by Tim Rose,my favorite and the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart.


Ewan Mc Call: First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.

Never Heard his version. Did hear Lightfoots version once. the Chad Michell Trio's version is Great. Flack's version is OK.

Hoit Axton: Greenback Dollar/Never Been to Spain.


Never heard is version of those songs if he had also recorded them of course The Kingston Trio had a hot with GD and 3 Dog Night also had sucess with Never been to Spain.

So which versions of these songs do you like the best?

Gord did the absolute best version of Me/Bobby that I ever heard!!! "Her" version makes the hair stand up on the back of me neck!!!!like fingernails on a chalkboard!!!Ahhhggg!!

Well, not recorded, but.... the first time I saw Lightfoot he did a really good version of Kristofferson's Lovin Her Was Easier Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again. Great surprise.

Peter, Paul and Mary did a nice job on Tim Hardin's Reason to Believe.

Roseanne Cash had a nice hit with John Stewart's Runaway Train but I like John's original better. Of course John had the rather curious honor of having the Monkees cover (and slighty alter words to) Daydream Believer.

I prefer Gord's version of Phil Ochs' "Changes" and Shel Silverstein's "On Susan's Floor" - can't imagine another version. But, sorry, I've always liked "her" version of "Me and Bobby McGee", probably because I heard it first. Janis is definitely an acquired taste but I'm a contemporary (almost) and I grew up listening to everything from boogie woogie to Strauss waltzes, from Bobby Vee to early Harry Belafonte (Ma-til-da, she take me money and run Venezuela...) Hadn't heard a voice like that again until Susan Tedeschi recorded "Rock Me Right" on the "Just Won't Burn" album.

I prefer either version of "Me and Bobby McGee" by Lightfoot or Joplin. Gordon makes it a laid back story about two friends traveling.

Joplin makes it a he/she relationship and turns it into a full tilt blues rocker that deserved it's #1 status.

Too bad it was posthumous,she sang that song live one time,to a friend in a hotel room in Canada in 1970.
