Phil Ochs

(There But for Fortune)

Show me a prison, show me a jail
Show me a pris'ner whose face has grown pale

And I'll show you a young man
With many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or I

Show me an alley, show me a train
Show me a hobo who sleeps out in the rain

And I'll show you a young man
With many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or I

Show me the whiskey stains on the floor
Show me a drunk as he stumbles out the door

And I'll show you a young man
With many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or I

Show me a country where the bombs had to fall
Show me the ruins of buildings so tall

And I'll show you a young land
With many reasons why
There but for fortune, go you or I
You or I

I believe her first album was in 1960. "Joan Baez 5" (October 1964), which contained her cover of Phil Ochs' "There but for Fortune," became a Top Ten hit in the U.K. It turns up on compilation albums including "The First Ten Years." She had an awesome voice, which is still better than most.

I have a Joan "Baez" LP on Vanguard that is a sort of animated B & W picture of her playing guitar and singing and it is self titled.

It looks like it could be over 40 years old and maybe her first. Song titles escape me at the moment for I haven't listened to it in awhile.

She's one of the greats, that's for sure.

Wow, Borderstone, you brought back a flash from the past for me! I remember seeing that album in my brother's hands many times!! And since he keeps everything he's ever owned, it's probably still in his closet! I'll have to ask him about it!!
