We know Gordon Lightfoot is your #1 favorite, but who is your #2 favorite singer or band and why? Are they as close to resembling GL as possible or do they offer you a complete contrast to his style (e.g. Nine Inch Nails)?
Sorry, you only get to pick one #2 fave, no laundry list. It's tough, but if you were on a deserted island with only GL's entire collection, which one other collection would you need to have? Hurry, your ship is sinking...

Only one? It's not easy but for me it has to be Kris K. He writes the most amazing
lyrics.

There's only one other singer that has a voice that soothes my soul almost as well as Gord. That is Tom Rush. I suppose they're similar in some ways but then again TR has his own style. Love his newest "River Song." If you want to know more about him, check out www.tomrush.com
But I'll break my rule here and name another--for if I were stranded on a deserted island, it would have to be Jimmy Buffett's collection! He never fails to bring a smile and completes my tropical side--yes, a Parrothead!

For any of you who have been hanging around here a while, this won't be any more of a surprise than Char's Kris K.: Rodney Crowell.
I must say he's not my #2, though. In my mind he's tied for #1!

Jimmy Buffett is right up there! He's a party animal yet his ballads are so touching.

I never said Gord wasn't #1 I just said that He and Rodney were tied for that position - it doesn't deminish Gord any at all! Besides, we know how generous Gord is - I'm sure he wouldn't mind sharing a spot in my heart with Rodney, lol.

Supaiblue,
My very close number 2 is Steely Dan.
There would be quite a gap between 2&3.
(Whoever 3 is)!
Frank.

Merle Haggard and The Strangers. When he began recording for Capitol in 1965 he used his own musicians (unheard of at the time) recorded at the Capitol Studios in Hollywood (you know, the circular building you can see from the freeway). He brought in a few LA studio players from time to time like James Burton (who was just elected to the R&R Hall of Fame) Jim Gordon, and versatile but unknown guitar/banjo/harmony singer named Glen Campbell. And as far as associating Hag with "Okie From Muskogee", I guarantee you he's written several hundred songs better than that one including one called "Irma Jackson" about an interracial love affair that Capitol refused to put on an album or single for several years.

Hey Westernstar, you're preaching to the choir in my case. I love Merle! One of my favorite songs ever is one of his called "If You Hated Me"

Janice:
Did Hag ever record "If You Hated Me"? I bought a five disc set from Bear Family Records called "Untamed Hawk" and I don't recall hearing that one. It would be interesting though. As an aside, Kris Kristofferson confessed that the first song he ever wrote was "I Hate Your Ugly Face". Then he added that he was about 10 years old at the time.

I have two trees of favourites: the singer-songwriter tree (also known as the 'secondary' tree) and the AOR/West Coast tree.
Of the singer songwriters Gordy is at the top most days of the week, and is usually followed by Paul Simon (WITHOUT Garfunkel)
On the other tree TOTO hold prime position, and are not too closely followed by Chicago.
Interesting, huh?
Brett.

Westernstar9, "If You Hated Me" is from Merle's That's The Way Love Goes LP - yes I still have and listen to vinyl It really is the quintessential one-sided love song. It was the "B" side of the single "Some Day When Things Are Good"
Brett, I too love Toto! I saw them in concert just after Hold The Line was released. They opened for Styx - what a show!!
Merle Haggard - Toto - Styx...guess I have more than one tree as well, LOL.

Janice: Thanks for the update. "Untamed Hawk" covered ALL of his recordings on Capitol between 1962-1968, including a perfectly awful rendition of "I'm A Lonesome Fugitive" recorded in Nashville. That as well as some better tracks appear including six takes of "I'm Looking For My Mind". Roy Nichols never played the same intro twice!

Uh, lets see:
Dallas Holm "I'll Rise Again"
Jim Weatherly "The Need to Be"
Jim Croce "Operator"
Kenny Rankin "Silver Morning"
David La Flamme "White Bird"
John Prine "Dear Abby"
Burton Cummings "These Eyes"
Bobby Goldsboro "Watchin' ScottyGrow" "Honey"
Roger Whitacre
Edward Bear "The Last Song"
Andrew Gold "Thank You For Being A Friend"
Albert Hammond "I'm A Train"
Gilbert O'Sullivan "Clair"
Nat King Cole "Love"
I can't seem to conclude # 2 from the above list. Ok, S. B. since you want me to nail it down to one with no "laundry list" I'll say....Jay Black from Jay and The Americans...or maybe Toy Caldwell from Marshall Tucker. Oops...there I go again breaking the rules. How about Andy Williams for my final answer?

classicmixdj: Well, you make the 2nd person in the world that I didn't have to explain "Who's Jim Weatherly" to. Too bad his voice didn't match his songwriting talents.

Number two for me, not including "groups" or "bands" is Old Blue Eyes himself, Francis Albert Sinatra (or Frank, if you will!)
If this was a top ten list you'd think I was pulling your leg. Fun topic though.

Back in the late 70's / early 80's I lived in a house with my 2 brothers & 2 to 8 other brothers/sisters/lovers/friends,most of us were musicians.Boy did the neighbors love us! Just kidding, they were nice.
Anyway-the fairly extensive album collection that resulted was seperated into sections like this;
1.Lightfoot,Mitchell,Cohen,Dylan
2.Beatles,Stones,Who/Townshend
3.Common Mortals A thru Z
4.New & Abused
I'm back to boring old alphabetical these days.Does anyone else miss the 12 x 12 artwork and easy to read print on LPs? I've still got my old ones but new I buy CDs.Sorry I'm gettin' off the subject here.So-in addittion to the above I also like Tom Rush, Ian & Sylvia,Fred Neil,Richard Thompson,Fraser & DeBolt,Norman Blake.....
What was that, pick only 1 to go with GL?
What a savage little desert island! O.K. -
Joni Mitchell
Whew,that was hard.
lol -does that mean lots of love?
russ
p.s.where do you plug in your stereo on a desert island?

I'm amazed that David Mallett doesn't appear on any list. He is a phenominal songwriter, guitarist, and singer who holds Gordon Lightfoot in great regard. See for yourself at davidmallett.com. Joan

#2? Hmmmmmm. I guess since Neil Diamond used to be my favorite,it'd be him but I think also he'd have to share that with John Denver. On the female side my #1 is Mariah Carey. It's hard to pick a #2 for that one but some contenders would be Judy Collins,Olivia Newton John,Janis Joplin and from this day & age Alicia Keys. (Madonna woul be about #3 or #4,she's good but not that good. It's been Borderstone and remember,Peace It Up!
