According to toronto.com , Gord will be next to last (somehow they "saved" Burton Cummings for last). However, I'm not sure that Family Farm Tribute will have their act together in time for the webcast. They still don't have their site translated to French!

I'm hoping they will be able to pull the webcast off. I'm not too worried about them not translating the website into french Valerie because there isn't a lot of info on it and everyone will probably be speaking and singing in English anyway (I doubt Gordon would sing Nous Vivons Ensemble for this venue ) If you arrive at the webcast part of the site early and there isn't anything happening yet don't despair because from what I understand the bandwidth for such an operation has to be wide and therefore quite expensive so I doubt that they are going to webcast the stage being set up. I'm going over there now so I'll be at the website when it starts. I sure hope it works!!

I just went to www.familyfarmtribute.com.
Nothing is happening yet & they tell you
to check again shortly. I'm at Long Island,
NY, USA & it is 1:50pm EST. They should
be 50 minutes into the concert.

I was able to see the webcast but before Gordon Lightfoot appeared, friends of ours dropped in, so I missed it all. Did anyone else see it or watch it on TV?

Yes, I saw it but at the CBC site and not at the Family Farm Tribute site. It really was a thrill to see Gord live on the Internet. He sang IYCRMM and CRT. If anyone has taped it, I'd love to have a copy as CRT has long been my favorite song.

I did get to see it after all. At first I couldn't figure out how I could park myself in front of the computer for four-some hours. But managed to stay close and watched it unfold. It was great to see him and know that it was a live performance. He sounded and looked great. CRT was especially beautiful I thought. Also was good to hear what the newspeople had to say about him afterwards and hear the crowd response.

Thanks Valerie and Chris. So Chris, what did the newspeople have to say after he finished playing?

Sorry, guess I could've added that info. There were two women sitting up in a booth with the stage on a screen behind them. When GL finished they commented on the standing ovation he was getting and the response of the crowd. One of them said something about GL being one of Cananda's greates songwriters. I think she may have used the term legend or icon. One said something about how special it is to see him perform live. Right before the commercial, one of them said she'd read or heard (can't remember which) a discussion about selecting a poet laureate for Canada and as she heard this discussion she said to herself -- hey, I know every word of CRT, we have a poet laureate in Gordon Lightfoot. (I'm really paraphrasing here but I think this is the gist of what they said. My impression is that GL got a more enthusiastic response after he performed than many of the other performers but I really didn't pay as close attention to the others. I was sort of back and forth to the computer until GL came on. ANd of course I'm somewhat biased.)

Thanks Chris! I was thinking of the different performers at the concert and the person that would have been perfect for it (besides Gordon Lightfoot that is) would have been Stan Rogers singing "The Field Behind the Plow". Of course it couldn't have happened but I can't think of a song that would have been better suited for the concert. I seldom go to concerts, and I really regret not having seen Stan Rogers perform. I guess that's why I want to see Gordon Lightfoot every opportunity I get. Does anyone like Stan Rogers' music besides me? Since this a Gordon Lightfoot discussion board I can make this relate . Just as GL played Bob Dylan's music in coffee houses before writing and singing his own material, Stan Rogers played GL music in coffee houses before writing and singing his own work. Some of the songs on Stan Rogers' first recordings had Barry Keane (we know him!) as drummer.

Annette,
I'm embarrassed to say I don't know who Stan Rogers is. Is he Canadian? From your post it sounds like he is no longer living -- is that correct? Sounds like I would like his music.

I had a weird thing happen the other day. I got a gift certificate from Amazon because they lost an order of mine so I decided to order a cd of a Steve Goodman album I bought many years ago. I used to listen to him alot in the 70s but then sort of lost track of what he was doing. Anyway in the process of thinking about which cd to buy I found a website for him and discovered he passed away in the mid 80s from leukemia. It made me sad for awhile - to think that he was gone and no longer making music and I didn't even know it. This is totally off the track of GL, sorry!

Annette do you have GL concerts scheduled for this year?

I just checked and Florian has the updated list of tours for 2000. It's at the top of his home page. I would have to travel to Oregon to go to a concert or I guess Toronto. Is Gordon close to where you are?
I know how you feel, it does make you sad when you realize that you won't be able to hear any new music from that person and especially when they died young. Yes, Stan Rogers is Canadian and he died in Cincinatti (1983) where the plane had to make an emergency landing because of an electrical fire on board. I think 23 other passengers died as well. The songs he is most well known for are The Mary Ellen Carter (about a ship that sank but was raised up out of the water again) with the chorus "rise again, rise again" - if you heard it you might recognize it and "The Northwest Passage" which is done accupello (sp?). In one of the music guides it says that some people confuse him with Gordon Lightfoot. I don't, but maybe to the casual listener it could happen. They are similar in that they both do ballad type songs - which Stan seems to have done more of, similar type of guitar style and their voices have a similarity except Stan's was much lower. Gordon's voice is less rugged, more refined while Stan's is more rugged and has that maritime sound to it. If you like ballad type songs and a folkier sound you might want to listen to a few clips. I think CDNow has them. Let me know what you think.
Oh, I just remembered a story I read in a book about Stan Rogers to do with Gordon Lightfoot. Stan was in a recording studio just about to record one of his first demos and GL was in another studio down the hall doing some last things to one of his albums. His produced told GL to come down the hall and check out this new upcoming talent. Stan was rather surprised to see GL, someone he admired so much, watching him do the recording (can you imagine? ). It was a funny type song and GL thought it was funny and made a couple of jokes and they laughed about it. Such a small world, isn't it?

Thanks for the info on Stan Rogers - I will check his music out at cdnow.

I'm lucky in that GL will be in my area twice in March. He comes to York, PA, which is about an hour from me, on March 1. I bought those tickets what seems like eons ago - last July. Then recently he was booked to do a benefit concert for a children's mental health facility right here in Baltimore on March 12. I couldn't resist so I bought tickets to that as well. I'm going to that with my sister with whom I've seen GL many, many times over the years. We treated ourselves to the high end tickets which means we can go to the reception afterwards and finally meet GL. Needless to say I can't wait for March.

I have been to many of Gord's concerts. How do I get a backstage pass? It would be great to meet him.

Walt,
I don't know how you get a backstage pass. I would imagine unless you know GL or have some special connection it is pretty hard to get. The way I'll be able to meet him is that the concert is a benefit concert -- so to raise money for this nonprofit they are selling more expensive tickets and the people who want to support the cause (or like me, who also want to meet GL) can buy those tickets and then will be able to go to a special reception after the concert.

I've heard of many people meeting GL by just hanging out at the back stage door after a concert and waiting until the band comes out to leave. Apparently GL and the band are very gracious about taking the time to sign autographs and talk to people. You have to be patient I think because it may take awahile, but I have heard that this is how many folks have met him. GOOD LUCK.

I'm really happy for you Chris. Hopefully you'll have a chance to speak with him if only for a minute. I guess you have a couple of months to think of what to say.

Thanks for the info Chris. I'll hopefully be at the concert in York, Pa, that is if we don't get three feet of snow.
