I'm of the same mind as RickC. Yes, I feel those songs are chauvanistic but that's okay because that was Gord's intention when he wrote them. Whether those lyrics are an extension of his personality- well so be it, we all have our faults. It's a shame Gord doesn't play certain songs anymore because he's afraid they may offend someone.

Just some comments on the critisism of " For Lovin' Me".

I like " For Lovin' Me " and " I'm Not Saying" just because they are chauvanistic.
I can't say that I share the attitude of the song but as a guy I kinda like hearing someone voice it once in a while. It gives the album a little " bite " and nastiness which I appreciate after hearing about robins flying, pumas calling, and peaceful waters. Besides I think chauvanism was a small part of the folk scene back then. ............
If Gord wants to change the lyrics slightly to IYCRMM on his daughter's suggestions I can respect that. It being a personal matter between him and his family.
However,I wish he wouldn't worry about the political correctness about some of his earlier songs (I gather from other posts that he doesn't play " For Lovin' Me " anymore).

Well, I'm female and I like the song For Lovin' Me. After my breakup with my fiance a couple of years ago, I LOVED IT.
I was so hurt, and recovery was a long time taking place. During that recovery time, he used to come around, kinda lead me on.
We had a deep emotional bond for over 7 years, and it pissed me off that he would toy with that because he couldn't face letting go after he sent me away. He's with someone else now, but miserable, I'm alone and glad of it and content. But I used to sing that song from MY point of view, it just made me feel better. Not that I'm that way all the time, but there it is.
That's what you get for lovin' me baby. yeah.
Good Therapy.

I'm quite surprised to see all the chauvinism remarks about "For lovin' me". I'm a woman, and I never once thought that! I've always loved that song, I've been singing it since the late 70's. For years I even considered it my theme song! It was a great way to warn men of my non committal nature!

Thats actually how I interpreted it from Lightfoot's point of view, not a "ha ha I'm out to get all the women I can", but more of a person who was running from relationships. There's nothing in the song to indicate he was happy about the song, it's rather mournful. In fact there is the hope that in the future things might change ("well I just might pass this way again")

I don't find it arrogant or chavinistic at all, it's a great song.

lightfoot will disagree about the chavinistic bit... but he'll agree that it's a great song!

enigma- i see the song as being honest and truthful - "hey - here i am - flaws and all- take it or leave it".
honesty upfront lets a person choose with all the cards on the table...
i like that!
