Have we ranked our favorite songs from 'Old Dan's Records' yet? I searched the archives and couldn't find it, so I don't think so. Here's my list (ranked favorite to least favorite):
1. It's Worth Believin'
2. Can't Depend on Love
3. That Same Old Obsession
4. Lazy Mornin'
5. Hi'way Songs
6. Mother of a Miner's Child
7. Farewell to Annabel
8. My Pony Won't Go
9. You Are What I Am
10. Old Dan's Records
1 & 2 are two of my very favorite GL songs ever, and I had trouble picking one over the other, but "It's Worth Believin'" edges out "Can't Depend." 3-7 are all pretty close--all are quality songs. "My Pony Won't Go" is a fun little bluesy song that I enjoy, but it's a song I only care to hear once in a while. "You Are" is a pleasant country song with a casual, toss-off feel to it. The title song is okay but has always been my least fave from the album.

I agree with Borderstone's list, that is exactly what I would've posted.

Okay, here's mine:
1. Can't Depend On Love
2. It's Worth Believin'
3. Mother Of A Miner's Child
4. That Same Old Obsession
5. Lazy Mornin'
6. You Are What I Am
7. Old Dan's Records
8. Hi'way Songs
9. Farewell To Annabel
10.My Pony Wont Go
I *really* have a problem with #1 and 2 - where they place changes with my mood but I have loved the sound of "It's Worth Believin'" since I first heard it on vinyl. Something about the rhythm of it grabs my ear.

Probably, my favorite album when all is said and done; at least for the moment. Here's the way the songs stack up for me; there are numerous ties, in the first 3 slots, that's because, frankly, I can't make up my mind:
1. Mother of A Miner’s Child
1. That Same Old Obsession
2. Lazy Morning
2. Can’t Depend On Love
3. It’s Worth Believin’
3. You Are What I Am
4. Old Dan’s Records
5. Hi’Way Songs
6. Farewell to Annabel
7. My Pony Won’t Go

2. Same Old Obsession
3. Hi' Way Songs
4. Lazy Mornin'
5. Can't Depend on Love
6. Mother of a Miner's Child (The top 6 are all close together; 7-10 aren't really close to the top 6)
7. Farewell to Annabel
8. ODR
9. My Pony Won't Go
10. You Are What I Am (not bad, but it's just kind of "filler")

"My Pony WOnt Go",despite it's delibearte pace,is still somehow a "catchy" song.
That's the only reason I put it above "Farewell To Annabel",which is great but could be a touch shorter.

My favorite song on "Old Dan's Records", a rare album it seems, is "Farewell To Annabel", a rather haunting piece of music.

This is a terrific album which could have been even better if "Too Much to Lose" had not been cut in favor of "You Are what I Am".

Yeah, I can't believe those great songs on 'Songbook' didn't make it onto his albums, especially "A Message to the Wind" (although "The Last Time I Saw Her" kind of took its place, I guess), "Too Much to Lose," "Borderstone," "Heaven Don't Deserve Me," "Stone Cold Sober," and "You'll Still Be Needing Me."

I often wonder how a producer makes the call on which songs go on an album and which ones are cut. In the "Songbook" compilation, there are definitely some songs that are superior to what was put on a specific album. IMO, "Never Say Trust Me" for example, which has Lightfoot's finger-picked Gibson SG with Terry Clements flat-picking a familiar accompanyment on his Gretsch, should have ended up on "Salute" instead of, say, "Broken Dreams". But then, how do you cut a Gordon Lightfoot song off any album anyway.....

This sounds crazy , but I like to listen to this album in the fall, when the leaves are turning, and the grain harvest is going full swing. It just has that type of 'sound' to it.
It's actually one of my favorite GL albums.
1. Old Dan's Records (puts me in a good mood every time)
2. That Same Old Obsession
3. Lazy Mornin'
all others rank about the same.
