Lightfoot's surprise return to the stage
ORILLIA, Ont. (CP) — Gordon Lightfoot performed Sunday night for the first time since being knocked down by an aneurysm in 2002.
The impromptu performance came at the Mariposa Folk Festival, after a couple thousand fans were told not to leave at the end of a Gordon Lightfoot tribute.
What the audience didn't know was that Lightfoot was backstage, ostensibly to hear the other musicians perform his songs.
When organizers asked if he would make an appearance onstage to say hello to the crowd, Lightfoot said he would sing too.
"I'll just have John (Andersen, Lightfoot's driver) get the guitar out of the car," he told a stunned group that included musicians and festival organizers.
The crowd was on their feet instantly with a loud standing ovation for what would turn out to be Lightfoot's first public singing appearance since he was stricken with an aneurysm while performing at the Orillia Opera House on Sept. 7, 2002.
The Canadian legend left the stage with a bow after playing just the one song — 'I'll Tag Along.'
The singer said he hoped to resume performing in a couple of months.

As my 15 year old daughter would say: "omigawd, omigawd, omigawd!!!!" Giggle. Great news, wish I'd been there.
Here's a link to a similar article (with a little more detail) in the Orillia Packet & Times:
http://www.orilliapacket.com/webapp/...ame=Local+News
It cuts off at the end, but I think the last words are "before long."

Or even reread how you managed to graduate in picture posting then you could have displayed the pic yourself, but see below:-
I am about to reveamp/consolidate my tutorial on displaying pics here so that Char may resume showing such pics here herveryself!!
(after an earlier lobotomy and recent hard drive reformatting she has lost my carefully crafted instructions)

Ok Char well google alerts eventually came through with four links including this one http://www.cbc.ca/story/arts/nationa...oot040712.html
with a May 2004 picture
and on the companion thread on the Newsgroup a sweet person using the name "sugar" said
"I was there -- he looked fantastic, his voice was strong and clear, and his
guitar playing was the best I'd ever heard in person. He blew the entire
audience halfway to Penetanguishene."

He looks so good! You know after getting over the initial shock of this news, it really is fitting that he came back to where he left off. The concert in 2002 was for the soldiers home and the mariposa festival I believe.

According to a person named Sugar who attended the show and posted on the newsgroup, he sounded strong and his guitar playing was excellent.

East of Midnight, BillW. "I'll Tag Along" is one of my favorites. I've heard it live - well, in a radio interview - that he did in the late 1980s, just Gord with guitar. Wonderful.

Yesssa! Yesssa! Yessir!!! One year,10 months and 4 days later...he's singin'!!! Awesome news, awesome article, awesome picture and what a decidedly unusual choice of songs to come back on stage with!! I love that song and others from that LP but no way would I have ever guessed that'd be the 1st upon his return! He continues to surprise us.
...and Here's an eerie little coincidence...last night while going to sleep,I was playing one of my home-made GL tapes,I just happened to choose tape #4,the one with,"I'll Tag Along" on it!! Spooky.

Too, too awesome. What any of us would not give to have been there! I can't even imagine how exciting it must have been for audience. Thanks so much for passing this along. I feel so jealous of the folks to the north (I'm in California). You get all the GL news! Plus, he's appreciated so much more there-revered, really, as he should be.

Rona,
just be thankful you are on the same continent as Gord. I'm across the Pond and never get any news here! I call it Gord-deprived-land.

I have been lurking this website for months, and I do enjoy the updates, pictures and gossip. I have been attending Gordon's shows since the early 70's. I once got a kiss on the cheek from him, and he once sang a song I requested while I was sitting in the front row at a concert. Now in my fifties, all I can say is , the guy still turns me on. Thanks to all of you for keeping us posted on the greatest songwriter, singer and musician anywhere.
