Hi everyone! Saw Gord last night in concert and it was WONDERFUL! And I'm not just saying that. It was truly great. Steve, it will be interesting to compare notes and see if you had the same experience I did.

I left Kansas City at 5:00 and fought road construction much of the way to Salina. Compensated by driving 85 inbetween the points of road construction. So I got to Salina about ten minutes to concert time. BUT THEN---a stopped train on the tracks! AAghh! I was beating my head against the steering wheel as I sat and waited for the train to move. So it turns out I was late. Got to my seat near the end of the first tune, "Sea of Tranquility," which I'd really wanted to hear.

Once I had time to collect myself, I noticed that Gord sounded really good. He sounded all warmed up to me, and it was only the 2nd tune. So he seemed really "on" to me, and after several songs the audience really seemed to be getting into it. By my perception, the atmosphere went from good to better. The audience became more and more enthusiastic, cheering and whistling loudly after each tune, laughing at his jokes, and it seemed to me that Gord was enjoying the warm reception and enjoying himself. So it really made for a great concert. I saw him in Purchase, NY in March, and maybe I just don't remember, but I don't think the audience was nearly as responsive then.

At one point he said he was going to go "way back" and might have said something about not going too far back, and someone yelled, "Go back!" He said that reminded him of the time he was doing a concert in Fresno. After they'd done several medium-paced ballads in a row, a lady in the audience called out, "Can you pick it up a bit?" He laughed about that.

Before doing "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" he joked and said something like, "Now they're going to ask me to write one about the Russian submarine."

During the intermission I slipped a note under his microphone stand, basically a thank you note. When he came out for the 2nd set he saw it, grabbed it and started reading it, and I think he got a big smile on his face. (I hope I'm not making this up in my favor) Then he read the first half of my note out loud! He read,"Gordon, thanks for coming to Salina! I drove like a maniac from Kansas City (after work) to see you." (The rest of my note thanked him for hanging around for those of us who didn't catch him in his early days, and asked him to keep singing for us.)

I think he then made a joke about how the last set had ended on a cheery note about slaughter on the high seas (The Wreck) and he was getting ready to do Ode to Big Blue, but I think it was then that he realized he hadn't plugged his guitar in, and laughed and said something like, "that would help."

One of the funniest moments was after he had introduced the band and he had them all bow their heads in a comical, jerky way, and then he said something about he and the band members having to be polite to each other in order to get along after all the years they'd been together. Then he said, "talk about Survivor! They (on the Survivor show) only had 39 days!"

He ended with CRT, (yay!) and encored with "Old Dan's Records." When they came out for the encore, he said, "We are going to be super-charitable" (pause) "by only doing one."

After the show I saw some people waiting to get back stage so I joined the group and asked them if they were going to get in to see Gord. A woman holding some roses told me that they were a special party, they were on the list. I asked her, "How do you get on the list? and she said, "Well, my father was on the Edmund Fitzgerald." Ulp. Gulp. I told the woman I was sorry and slunk away. I didn't want to intrude on that.

But as luck would have it I did get to meet Gord! A small group of people, 8 or 10 were waiting outside behind the building for him. First Mike and Barry came out, then Gord. I don't think Rick or Terry came anywhere near us, but I could be wrong about that. I felt kind of uncertain about the whole thing. I'm so paranoid about being a bother, and I know Gord had already been meeting those family members, and they were on their way out, so I felt uneasy about approaching him. But Gord was very nice, signed stuff for each person and talked briefly with everyone a little bit. It was nice to be able see his smile up close, and he was smiling a lot. But understandably, he and the other band members were ready to get out of there, so someone, I think it was Rick, drove up, and Gord got in.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable evening. Now I have to see what I can do about getting to Columbia, MO in November.

I'm sorry if this whole account is too long. A partial set list follows. Partial because a few times I forgot to write down the song, and I confess I don't know all the song titles (just got his boxed set the other day)

Thank you very much for your review of the concert. It would be very hard for me to write down the songs as I get too excited and I would probably drop fifteen pens.

This continues to show how Gord appreciates his fans.

Monebalone,

Yes, I was there, in the first row, but on the riser section, stage left. I should have figured it was someone on this list that left that note.

You gave a pretty complete review, just let me add a few observations. It was HOT!! About 101 degrees in Salina yesterday afternoon. Gord was in good voice, he dropped a few of the high notes, but hey, were all getting a little older. Since he's been off 10 days he was rested and ready. Now he's got one night stands the next nine days. Pretty tough. Remember he said he wasn't there by accident? Wonder what he meant by that. I was suprised that he didn't mention in the song intro, that the daughter of a deceased Ed Fitz sailor was present. I had read it and heard it on the radio. Maybe he wasn't aware.

I was glad to hear "Heaven Dont Deserve Me"
for the first time live. Wish he had done a few more rareities from the anthology. I have been working cording out some of them.. I'll send them to Florian when I get them finished if he wants to post them. Anyway, the first set was great. The highlight of the second set for me was "Song for a Winter's Night", written in a rainstorm in Cleveland. It was exquisite!! Blackberry Wine started off a little shaky and I have to report that I was disappointed with CRT, the traditional last song. It was done without any intro and much slower that I ever remember. I thought it sounded stale, lacking much energy and emotion. Maybe he's just done it too often. But that's a small gripe.

I found out that it did require a pass to go backstage. I didn't want to try to crash the scene, so just left and played Gord tapes all the way home. I'm staying at my mom's house about an hour west of Salina.

Hope to hear some reports from you other guys over the next few weeks.

Monebalone, are you going to the KC gig on Nov. 9th? Don't think I'll make it. Just too much excitement for an old guy.

Great review! The daughter of the lost seaman on the Fitzgerald was on another site a while back saying she was going to be attending the show you went to. I don't think Gord would point it out that she was there so as not to bring any extra attention to her and the family. He always seems so reverential when he speaks of the men and their surviving families.
Taking notes during the concert is a lot more difficult than it seems! I did it for the first time at Mariposa and I had a heck of a time sorting out my notes back at the hotel! LOL
I wish I had been doing it all along for the 35 or so shows I've seen Gord do. Plus the myriad of other performers I've also seen! Geez it would be so much easier on all of us if Gord would just videotape EVERY concert! Then we would be happy campers!
LOL

Happy belated birthday, Steve! Glad you made it to Salina okay. By the way, I'm originally from western Kansas. Ever heard of a little town called Ness City? Probably not, but no matter.

You made some good observations, and some things I'd forgotten about, like the comment that "it was no accident" they were in Salina. An intriguing remark, though I thought maybe it was just one of Gord's somewhat odd jokes.
Yeah, now that you mention it I did notice Gord straining at some of the high notes. But I was still satisfied overall and so were the two guys to the right of me. They thought Gord sounded really good, and said in comparison they'd seen Kansas perform in concert a few weeks ago and they were awful.

I was also surprised, once I found out that an Edmund Fitz family member was present, that he hadn't said more about the tragedy in the intro to the song.

Silly me, I didn't even know Gord would be in Kansas City until I checked the tour dates on this web site today. I nearly fell out of my chair! See I've been without a computer for months, and the last time I checked the tour schedule I didn't see KC on there. I only saw Salina and Columbia. Well, this is fantastic! Three Gord concerts in the space of 8 months. You can bet I'll be going to that one.

Have a safe trip back to Texas! Guess you have your Gord tapes so you'll be in good company.

Thank you Monebalone for a great report on what was obviously a great Gord show.
And thank you Steve for the added observations. Those of us who cannot get to see him 'live' as often as you guys can, depend upon these reviews/posts. Many thanks and keep 'em coming.
Monebalone - I particularly liked the mention of you seeing 'his smile' up close. And he read your note too. I'd say you had a great show!
Lucky you! Did you take any photos?

Silverheels, I didn't take any photos. But it was a very good experience otherwise, all around. I should also say right here for anyone who read my reivew that I am not very good about being objective. I love the man and his music too much, so my review might have been slanted in that direction.

Valerie, he did not do Don Quixote, which surprised me, because I know he does that almost every concert. I THINK he did A Passing Ship, because I wrote down "passing ship" in my notes, unless he has another song where he refers to passing ships. When I run the tune through my head I think I remember hearing it in concert, but I don't know if I'm just confusing his live performance with what I heard on CD. For shame. Sorry I can't be more definite.
Thanks a lot for the notes to my partial set list. Can you tell me which CD the tune Restless is on? I really love that song!

Hi monebalone,

Restless is a great song - and it's on the CD 'Waiting For You'.

While I was talking to Gord's daughter Meredith, I asked what her favorite song was and she replied "Don Quixote"

Thanks for the greeting. Sorry to be late replying. Was offline for the last month, trout fishing in Colorado and house painting in Kansas. Yes, I've heard of Ness City, my wife is from Bazine! Her maiden name was Frances Foos. Was at the old settlers reunion last May. I grew up in Ellinwood.

Hello Everyone,
So great to see so many of you were at the Salina, Kansas show. Gordon hasn't been to Tulsa in what seems like seven or so years, so when I found the Salina show on Valerie's website, I decided then and there that if Gordon is within 5 hours of Tulsa, and I can get off work, I'm going to every show I can go to. Gordon is going to retire someday so I want to see him every chance I can. But then again, just look how long Pete Seeger has been hanging in there! From the first time I heard That Same Old Obsession, I was hooked on Gordon Lightfoot. This was 1972, but the first time I heard the style of music he plays, which I enjoy so much, the 3-finger guitar style, was on Simon and Garfunkel's The Boxer, one of the greatest songs ever. This was 1969. After finding Gordon in 1972, I found a style of music I could really enjoy listening to and get involved with. I play guitar and write songs for fun and I really enjoy the Lightfoot style. The only downer to the Salina show was that I managed to get seated near some people who talked and giggled through the whole show (even after I glared at them, it continued). But it didn't really ruin it for me. It was just so great to see him after all this time.
Thank God for the internet and the super Lightfoot sites so we can find his touring schedule. I plan on going to the show in November in Springfield, Mo., and I think I'll situate myself backstage after the show. Tell me, is this something that is appropriate? I really would enjoy meeting Gordon if only for a minute. Favorite Album: Don Quixote (3-finger music perfected, what great songs).
Favorite Songs: Same Old Obsession, The Soul is the Rock, Restless (particularly the line "when you think about your Dad"... My dad passed away in 1997, it hits home). The Songbook package is wonderful. Does anyone know why there are no T-shirts or concert programs at Lightfoot concerts? What a great opportunity to sell a well-produced bio of Gordon. I'll always have my credit card ready. Again, hello to all and it is great reading your comments on the site.
One more thing: There was a great front page write up of the show in the Salina paper Friday morning Aug 25th, with super photos and a story about the Fitzgerald and the Cook's daughter (I saw you hold up the photo, what a nice, sweet gesture to honor your father.)

Take care everyone,
