From the Lightfoot show in Edmonton, Alberta and what a show, the guy still has it!
We had first row tickets (thanks again to Mr. Bernie Fiedler!) And although pictures were not allowed we (and most others) couldn't help ourselves so with me being directly in front of his stage set-up I managed to get some decent pics!
More on this later!
Thanks in advance,
-David

Basic crash course
1 NOTE WELL to display any picture on these forums it must be already on a web site as corfid itself does not store pictures,
so use a free picture hosting service that
1A allows "hotlinking "
1B prefernbly hosts pictures indefinitely
I thoroughly recommend imageshack as shown below
2. select the pix you wish to display
2A if you took them with a digital camera great
2B if on film then after printing get out your scanner, If you do not have either a scanner or a digital camera you are SOL
3. put them all together in a single folder
If the image files are small enough then they might all fit on a floppy disc (if you have such a drive)
this is to make step 3 below easier especialy if you wish to upload then display many pix
However if they are large as they will be if you were using a megapixel digital camera create a folder on your desktop
4 go to
http://www.imageshack.us
browse your computer to locate the folder or floppy drive
5 upload noting that there is a handy "resize image" option for large files, if necessary use the 640x480 (for message boards) option
6 upload
7 wait till uploading is complete
you should get a page listing a selection of codes with a thumbnail of the picture just uploaded in the page's centre
8 highlight and copy the bottom code
(which is actually the URL or address of the picture on image shack's server)
9 start a new corfid topic or reply
10 type your intoductory words
11 put your mouse cursor where you want the picture to apppear
12 look at the bottom of the page under the reply text box and see the section headed
"Instant UBB code" (UBB code-Ultimate Bulletin Board code) this is a special simplified version of the more common coding tags used by all web pages
13 select the last option in the right hand column "image"
14 click on it a pop-up box will er um pop up
15 delete the http:// that appears and paste in the image shack URL that is now on your clipboard (Tip use control and V)
16 press OK
automatically the URL surrounded by the UBB tags will appear in your reply text box where the cursor was
17 add a caption of your choice under that to tell readers what you are displaying and/or why
18 now check that it displays correctly by using the "preview" button
19 close this (preview) window and edit/correct typos etc if necessary
20 press "add reply or "add topic" as applicable
21 wait for all the glowing praise for your efforts!!
22 try to pat your own back and/or
23 grin hugely
John
24,I hope that helps a bit

OK David a few hours have now passed since I composed and posted my "Idiots Guide For Dummies etc" on displaying pictures hereabouts and so far not one of your mooted pix has appeared.
I am sure that I am not the only one here waiting with
Bated Breath
so how's about having a go man??
TIP try out my instructions on the test forum and if you make a complete bog of it simply delete the evidence!!

John, John,John,
I hope you find this message. Thank you so much for the 'Nightingale" I downloaded it and the visual stuff and the music look and sound great. I tried to send you a private message but your message box is apparently full. Thank you again. 'Lizbet

How did you reach Bernie Fiedler. I had his email address but he never answered my email. I was very disappointed as you can imagine.

As far as I know the world can only support the one and only Charlene who yes answers to that email address
Now mon cher M.Levesque
Are all Edmontonians dummies/wimps like you??
we know damn well that you have some digital pictures to share, you asked and I took precious time to write a wimp's guide to displaying pictures here.
I then chided you for taking your time following my simple guide
then you admitted defeat and took the coward's way out by attempting to overburden our hard pressed moderator with your pix by email, Now you know that they got lost in cyberspace
It is not a question of keeping up but of being daring and trying new things
Now be a good chap and stop procrastinating
John
P.S I meant to to reply yesterday when I realised that I had been in contact through a "torrent" link with another self confessed "quite the Lightfoot fan" your long lost brother or cousin maybe (?!) Jay Levesque who told me that he is an English Canadian from Regina Sask. When I reply to him I will mention you and give him the link to this topic so you two just might get together as Gordon once sang.
Meanwhile I will try not to confuse the pair of you again. and will send you the message I send him in a Private Message to you here
John

John & D. Levesque:
John - I'll be calling you back, as I promised, regarding your unintentional insults to me over time in corfid. I see you're up to your old self-described Brit'-style humour.
I know you were only kidding, and really appreciate the call. Is there a way you can empty your e-mail ? I only mean you must be bursting in corfid PM's full, and e-mail, too. Popular and knowledgable guy that you are, you still need some gentle prodding in being polite to corfidians.
John - I am completetly absorbed by medical issues/hospitalization of Merry....tired.... and yes your e-mail is full every time I try, too.
I do really hope you're doing OK.....
D. - NOTE to D. Levesque - this is John Fowles offbeat humour. He means no insult...but i found out in a difficult way myself. He was in fact kind enough to call me and apologize; albeit in voice mail, as busy as I am with family medical crisis.
He is a rare and good man; with a wicked sense of barbed humour he means no offense with. We occassionally beat him with a wet noodle, then wind up thanking him for his truly valuable primmers.
Don't let it hurt your feelings D.; he does not mean these things harshly. It is his style of humour, and is really quite a kind man who's been through a lot. I hope this helps. He is a treasure-trove of knowledge and is a well thought of original member of corfid.
But JOHN !!!! take it easy on D. Levesque. I have yet to post a photo, and EVERYBODY has been cool about me not posting yet my GL-signed canoe paddle pic; surely you can cut -D some slack too my old friend.
Soon John, as you requested; we will discuss the grammatical and profesional usage NOT interchangeable of Geodesic/Geodetic situation-dependent term applicability in the Geodesy end of my geodetic work with geodesic spheroidal arcs over the earth's surface. Phew say that ten times LOL
These were done originally by the Cassini family when mapping France with one of calculus' first app's ! Calculus was used and (re)-invented for the task in the 1600's, across the short pond.
These geodesics form geodetic chained quadrilaterals of mapping control networks that are mathematically robust to this day, despite GPS blindly and dangerously being used by non-professionals outside the mapping sciences .
John we'll chat about it as you requested . ....er.....espoused. It will be an eggregious erudite eminently evocative fun "primmer" in things outside your field.
The only reason I go off topic here on geodesy is that I am illustrating a case perhaps similar to mine that D. Levesque's expertise simply is different than your own.
Difference is, D. Levesque does not blabber on as I do/used to about geodetic/geodesic when you challenged me with a long, posted expose (snicker) of the terms being one and the same in use.( when asked, regarding my "handle") in his/her (sorry ??) areas of expertise.
Why do many Doctors and many Engineers (unfair generalization with some foundation in truth at times....)often think they know a lot about everything, when it is hard enough to know alot about one's own ken/area of knowledge or profession, or hobby ?
I say this respectfully because my father, being the eminent aerospace "rocket" scientist/engineer you know him by now to have been before he passed, was humble enough to recall the wise occidental saying: "he who is wise knows what he knows not". All in good fun, John.
This kind person D. Levesque does not know your style yet and, and no doubt has considerable expertise in such things as feudal Japanese history. (I looked at your profile D. ).
Look forward to seeing those pictures at your convenience and Char's......take care, D. . I see you're a long-timer corfidian. John's been up to hooligain edgy posts with some time on his hands and he can wait too; eh John ?

Further to my unswise and quite uncalled for outburst above in vhich I tried to inject some Brit humour into the matter of David having a go himself at displaying his pictures.
In my haste to let him know that I had been in correspondce with another member of his large family,I completely overlooked the fact that he had already sent me a Private Message giving me his email address and a suggestion that he could send to me the pictures that he had sent to Char.
I have emailed him in the affirmative and tried to apologise for my unintended insult, but have not yet received a reply or any pictures.
In my email I had said that I would "reply to the forum" and publicly apologise to him for being insulting and that "In retrospect I should not have used either term" and would use "some of the text for all to see" so here it is:-
Not for the for the first time I have offended somebody unintentionally by my attempt to make light of a matter.
I agree calling you dummy and wimp was insulting, it was my silly way of trying to get you to have a go at posting pictures yourself which can be a lot of fun and I had initially tried to make a simplified guide to doing so, for which I had already borrowed the "dummy" term used for many computer related books.
In my defence you had not said you did not understand my guide or why you were not going to try to use it.
I did in my first draft for my latest reply initially call you a straight wimp but had thought better of it and combined wimp with the dummy tag I had already used. In retrospect I should not have used either term and for that I apologise and will post a reply to the forum to that effect next, using some of the text above for all to see,
I also said that I "thought I would reply to your offer to email me the pix direct first which I was also remiss in overlooking before opening my big mouth as I did.If you would now do so I will be glad to display them for you."
......
Once again sorry for what I said
John
I very much appreciate Steve's understanding of why I do these silly things
and will conclude by saying that as part of a major revamp of muy own website I have been planning a "Mission Statement" of how I see my role in the worlds of Lightfoot, web page design and computers in general
This in a nutshell is that I am very impressed by the many thoughtful inhabitants of the WWW
and the huge quantity and range of free facilities and advice/help that are available and in my own way I wish to give back as much as I can while I have the time and energy
I also many years ago remember getting much joy from the Reader's Digest series entitled
"Laughter Is The Best Medicine"
and will continue to be always on the lookout for ways to try to demonstrate the tradition and joys of my native British Humour.
OK I know that there are many North americans who get it especially young Rex "the rez" who has just sent me a number of joke pictures about Lady drivers such as one that I was very tempted to display here. But then I had second third and even fourth thoughts and concluded:-
"Oops I guess that is insulting to half the readers hereabouts"
I just cannot win can I???
for the males here this is the URL of that picture

as I said Steve I really appreciated your appreciation of me,indeed I would find it difficult to explain myself better as you can see by my laboured response to David above
But I fail to understand why you had to say that my "PM AND email is full"
My corfid PM Incoming and Outgoing sections have totalled way under the 60 messages limit since I spent much time removing old messages a few weeks back and my reglar hotmail email account contains only a small fraction of the available 250MB
I was however meaning to PM you to see how Merry is fairing and remind you that I would still like to contact you on the steam type telephonio. so perhaps you can try the PM system again??

OK I have now I trust made my peace with David, who provided a very good reason for not being able to display pictures
himself here (yet!!) and he in turn has sent me some of his front row pictures starting with that magical period of anticipation before the orchestra march onto the stage:-

an artistic study of a water bottle about to fall off the stage
(I guess David sent this to emphasize that he was indeed occupying the pole position)
The remaining pix are largely self describing methinks

John
OK Now young David just click on the "quote" button then copy some of my coding and get yourself over to the Test Forum and have a go
to prove that you can do it after all
I just found out a new rule the maximum number of picures in a reply has now been set at 8 very wise
Note that all the above are comparatively small <147KB. Well done David I guess the original files were pretty large: coming from a 5 megapixel camera?

I find it amazing that at Massey they strictly enforce the NO PICS rule and say it is Lightfoot who wishes it be so...
A load of hooey as far as I'm concerned....
sheesh...
p.s. - I never did receive any pics from David to post here....I checked my deleted e-mails etc...so I'm glad they were at last sent to another picture poster for all to see!

I think that David did very well considering that he was aiming a fairly substantial digital camera up Gordon's nose!!
Olympus C5000Z according to information that arrived embedded on at least one of the files and that has these dimensions:-
4.1 x 2.9 x 1.8 inches (W x H x D, excluding protrusions
Somebody at Massey in November must try to remember to try to get an opinion from THE MAN himself rather than from a "Jobsworth" on the Hall's staff
John
I am still smarting over the officious usherette who last year clamboured over 6 laps to tell me to stop when it was not me anyway
but another fan in the row behind me. She then spent the next 25 minutes shining her stoopid flashlight at the stage into Gord's eyes checking on me!!
Just what do you call a female cretin, a cretinette??

She jumped all over me too John - I had NO flash being used. She was more annoying yammering away at me in the front row right under his feet than the damn picture taker!
lol
It may be that he'd prefer no flash and leaves it up to the hall to make the final decision and enforce it.
We shall get to the bottom of it tho.....

Good job David, very nice shots! And thanks to John for his assistance in posting them. I especially like the full shot where you can get a good view of his white boots... cool!

Dear old friend Sir John - I owe YOU an apology. You were quite correct regarding your mail boxes. PM'as were full on repeated attempts, but as advised I'll try again. E-mail I assume is still viable as you indicated.... sorry...
My eggregious error was regarding e-mail - I did not try that, foolish as that sounds, and then erroneously said it and your PM's were full. I stand corrected ole buddy. I must beg off one more time on having been very tired trying to care for Merry abd coordinate increasingly complex care for her.
She is home only temporarily, glad of it we both are, but scared of addressing her 24-hour care myself that I am told is not viable for a medical layman to do.
I will call you on the old "steam-phone" as you say LOL...still will call. You are in a que that we might debate stochastic processes over - obtuse reference to queing theory.....rim-shot.
You are in good company waiting for a call from me ( and I am not implying with bated breath LOL )I've had no time for - others waiting too are:
* old college friend who's a double-E chip/memory maker stuck in Wash. D.C. testyfying for months over a contractual matter in his production line for computer chips- worried over Merry and me
* A lifelong friend who sold magnesium to the Pacific rim for Dow Chemical, until they sold out to an offshore consortium - and now he is on the road 40 out of 52 weeks a year with not just the Eastern Hemisphere as his territory, but the whole industrialized planet. He is worried and calling. It takes 3 patches or so to get to him.
* My old friend from high school, a commercial carpenter who became Pres. of the Cleveland Joiner's Union, to insure more steady work as he said. Now he's taken a place in the country, and he and his wife - my old college fiend, too - are upset I have not called back with worry in their VM's.
Only reason I mention the above is to illustrate how desperate I am for time in caring for Merry and seeing to her longer term interests ( oh my God...), and I mean no offense or hurt feelings by waiting to call you back, John.
With respect and admiration, as always, and will call,
geo Steve
