I don't have access to the online article but I bought the paper and I did read today's part two of the interview.

Gotta hand it to Bob Doidge, he got involved with engineering Lightfoot's latest CD's after Barry Keane remembered " the guy from Hamilton who has pestered us for ever for a break" Bob apparently called EMP on a yearly basis and offered his services as a bass player should they ever need it... lol

Maybe I should do that as well if Barry gets sick I have most of the drum tracks down pat on my drumset... not only that I have a Pearl snare like he does lol.

Ya ya I'm delusional not gonna happen

Amazing. And he knows all the licks for all the Lightfoot songs through the years (or can figure them out on the fly). I'll let Cathy tell you more. He can also play just about any instrument he gets his hands on. The credits on Harmony are:

Bob Doidge (Classical & Hi-string guitar, cello, panpipes, bass, clay drum)

He accompanied Cathy on her CD, so you can hear more of his playing there when her CD is available.

Not only is Bob a good bass player, he's an amazing musician with a natural talent for picking up any instrument and figuring out how to play it in a very short time. He also has a talent for knowing which instruments sound best together. I walked into that studio as a complete unknown. Bill Blakeney, the guy who set up the studio time, had heard my music, and Bob was just going on what Bill had told him. Bob had never heard my music, yet he was able to sit down and add a combination of bass, lead guitar, high string guitar, accordion, lap steel, drums, and somehow not steal the show. He let my singing and playing shine through and very tastefully added the backing tracks. The first time I heard the results, I was just blown away!
On top of that, he's a genuinely nice person. He's quite well-known in the music business, but there is not an ounce of conceit in his personality. I was a little concerned about being nervous during the recording session, but his friendly, unassuming nature calmed me down as soon as I met him.
Bob's bass playing is very much influenced by John Stockfish. He said as a teenager, he used to sit in his room for hours on end, playing along to Gord's records and trying to duplicate the Stockfish sound. He knows these songs note for note, and would not have a bit of trouble stepping in for Rick Haynes if he had to.
I posted a link to a couple of my songs awhile back. I'll repost it here so you can hear his talent. On the first one, City Of New Orleans, I'm strumming the D-15 and singing. Bob is playing bass, fingerpicking the high string guitar, playing lead electric guitar and drums.
On the other one, Across The Great Divide. I'm strumming and doing the fingerpicking. He's fingerpicking the high string, playing bass, accordion and drums.

I had originally planned on only doing two or three Lightfoot songs for the CD, but once we got rolling, we couldn't stop. We'd do a Ligthfoot tune and he'd do his parts and ask, "Do you know anymore Lightfoot tunes?" Right. Do I know more Lightfoot tunes. He didn't know what he was getting himself into. The CD ended up with six Lightfoot tunes and seven by various artists. We had a heck of a lot of fun on those Lightfoot tunes!

Cathy Across the Great Divide by The Band? I loved that song. So how about a little self promotion, when is the CD available? Is Val doing the distributing?

It will be available this summer. Val is doing the artwork for me. We're putting a picture that my Mother painted on the front cover of the CD case. Val's also helping me with the licensing and distribution. We'll put an online store on my site and people can buy it from there. I'll send out a notice to my mailing list when it's available. You can join the mailing list at my site. It's more secure than Fort Knox, and I can guarantee you won't get any spam from it. You will only get a newsletter once every three or four months, and announcements as to where I'll be playing.
So feel free to join.

I didn't see an air guitar in the studio. I'm sure if you lent him yours, he'd be playing it like an expert in no time flat.

Yes, I've got your order, Char.
