Did anybody see Gord live, during his most successful period.70-75.
If you did, you were lucky!
How about sharing it with us?

Frank.

I saw him at Carnegie Hall for a Christmas concert I think in November that was rebroadcast on WNEW around Christmas. It was at least partially a benefit for handicapped children, I think. And he had an opening act, and I can't think -- oh yes, I think it was Mimi Farina (sp?) I don't remember exactly what year it was, but if it qualifies, let me know...it was incredible!

That's the problem, I can't remember exactly which year. I probably could find out tonight when I go home because when it was broadcast on the radio I taped it and I think they said the date. It had to be
betwen '74 and '78, if that helps.

It was so amazing. And it was my first GL concert...wait, no, it wasn't at Carnegie Hall, it was at Philharmonic (Avery Fisher) Hall at Lincoln Center...I think..!! Anyway, it was a totally sold out event and he had the audience in the palm of his hand before he even came out on stage. I remember we were asked by the radio promo to bring canned food, which we did, to benefit the cause, and I remember a little girl in leg braces I think it was being brought out to meet him and he asked for "a big hand for the little gal!" Everyone sort of sang along with lots of stuff, and when he did the line in Pony Man about Mr. Whoop and
Holler the whole place started whoooooooping and it was just great. We did wait outside, I remember, because it was really cold..well, not 10 degrees but....we waited and waited and waited...and he finally came out and waved and was whisked into his limo..but I was so thrilled it was worth it all....it was an unforgettable experience..anyone out there happened to be at that concert???
wow, I'm all excited just remembering it!
Thanks for the opportunity to go there again.

I saw Gord in 74 or 75 at Massey Hall for the first time. I was hooked! He was gorgeous to look at and sang like an angel.Actually I saw him for the very first time at Massey when he got up with Kristofferson and sang Bobby Magee - picture is in "Songbook" - They were both "under the influence" but it was great to see them together like that. That would be my ultimate concert experience - Gord & Kris on the same bill doing their own stuff and doing a set together! Oh my word I think I would up and die a happy woman!

Char,
Massey Hall 74-75.(Local and peak of popularity). If I had to choose one concert, I wish I could have attended. That would probably be it.

Frank.

I saw Gordon Lightfoot in 1974 and 1975. I was still in high school. The 1974 concert was held at the Berkeley Community Theater in Berkeley, California. The 1975 show was somewhere in Phoenix, Arizona while I was a high school senior. My parents let me drive the 800 or so miles to Phoenix to see the show. That was pretty cool. To this day I still can't believe they allowed me to do it.

While living in San Diego I saw Gord perform twice at Golden Hall. The first time was in April of 75 and the second time was in April of 76. For one of the concerts I managed to get 10 front row seats. Just my wife and I and 8 of our closest friends. By that time I had been a Lightfoot fan for 10 years. All of my friends were just humoring me as most of them were not familiar with Gord at all. As it turned out it was one of those magical/musical nights that I will never forget. Gord always puts on a great concert but on this particular night he was really "ON" and the band was just as hot as he was. When he sang "All the lovely ladies in their finery tonight---I wish that I could know you one by one ---and all the handsome gentlemen with lovin' on their minds ---" as he was looking at us in the front row I was watching my friends and realized that they were spellbound by the words, the music and Gord's presence. Needless to say that by the end of the concert Gord had converted these 8 people to lifelong fans and they finally understood why I was so dedicated to his music. The next most magical concert that I have seen was the Reno concert in April 2000, But that's another story for another time.

Mr. H & H....I'd have to say that when I read your comments I felt shivers up my spine. I'm a true romantic at heart and the way Gord writes and plays is the way I'd love to play for my lady. Call it envy, respect, admiration or what you may (on my part) Gord certainly has a special way.

Mister hoot'holler, I just wanted to say that I read your post for Gord's birthday, oh my by the time I was done reading it, I had tears streaming down my face, what a beautiful birthday message to Gord, and I know it was truely from your heart. Just wanted to let you know how your words are very, very touching.

To Rose and Classicmixdj,
Thank you for your kind words. All I can say is that I was "inspired" by you know who.I'm usually a man of few words but when I get to talking about Gord I become very verbose. Before I became "Mister hoot'n and holler" [a member of this wonderful group], I posted my experiences of the concerts in Reno and Denver this year in this site's "Guestbook" On April 28 and August 27. I can't seem to write anything short about Gord and I thank the powers that be for not editing or condensing what I write.
I was nervous about putting that poem/song out for everyone to see but I decided to do it and let the chips fall where they may.
As usual this is getting to stretched out, so thanks again.

Got to see him 2 or 3 times during that period in Philadelphia. That was when Sundown was new and popular. We had great seats and got some photos. I remember being enthralled. He played the piano at one concert doing Fine As Fine Can Be which he said he had written for his daughter and hadn't been recorded yet. When I talk with friends about those days, we realize how lucky we were (and how much time has passed for all of us). We also used to sneak out and go to a small coffee house where we saw other folk singers including Tom Rush, Tom Paxton, Tom Chapin, and Tom Waits (the Toms). I now fully appreciate the talent we were exposed but not sure we realized it then. I still listen to all of them although Gord rules! My folks still don't know about the sneakin out so I won't divulge my identity. We couldn't have gotten a better education in any school.
