I was at the Mariposa Hall of Fame induction of Ian & Sylvia at Hugh's Room in Toronto tonight (last night, technically). Was surprised and delighted to see Lightfoot at the center table along with Ian & Sylvia and others. He got a great ovation from the crowd when he went onstage to say a few words about Ian & Sylvia. Modest as usual, he talked about their generosity to him in the early days--he said theirs was the first recording of a Lightfoot song.

Yes it was an awesome night! Probably a once in a lifetime opportunity as Ian and Sylvia are not keen to sing together and almost never do.

I would have loved to been there. I would bet this is close to the last time that Ian and Sylvia would sing together. Then to have Gord there too. You are one lucky guy!!

Lightfoot has been to see Ian at Hugh's a couple of times so it seemed more than likely he'd be there to see Ian and Sylvia...and he probably was there one of the two nights that Ian was performing on his own....Those two played a major role in Lightfoot's career and he's a thankful sort of guy!
I wish Hugh's Room had a more comprehensive website with reviews and pics that are up to date....

Two other talented Canadians - Sylvia Fricker and Ian Tyson...married for a while...
FOur Strong Winds, You Were On My Mind..they also wrote "someday Soon" that Judy Collins sang.
they did Early Morning Rain and For Lovin' Me way back in the mid 60's on an album.
do a google search...lots of info....
Char
they are both going strong and performing/making cd's. Ian has arthritis in his hands but is otherwise doiing great and living out west on a ranch...

Ian Tyson at Hugh's Room tonight--standing room only crowd. Despite the arthritis, Ian Tyson gave a fantastic show. This is the 3rd year I've gone and I can't recommend it highly enough. No way of knowing how many more years he'll be able to do it. Tonight he sang mostly his cowboy songs, but also some of the old ones, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

I interview Ian back in the early 90s for a video I was working on. At 60 he was built like a pro football quarterback! Made me feel pretty puny in comparison!

A year ago there was an Alberta Scene(variety of performers from a cross-section of arts). Celebrating Alberta's Centenial. This was held at several different venues here in Ottawa and at one of the smaller ones was a The Gift:Tribute to Ian Tyson with several performers(Tom Wilson,Corb Lund, Laura Vinson etc) and wouldn't you know it (I didn't) at the intermission a white stetson wandered through the crowd and Ol'Eon showed up unannounced and did a few tunes from his latest Cd. A real treat.
Over the years I've had seen both Ian & Sylvia but never together. Perhaps a reunion tour in the near future or a CBC special, that would be great to. I only hope they have better luck than Sonny and Cher after thier TV reunion.
I'm having a 60's flashback if my memory serves me right didn't Sylvia play autoharp in the beginning and could have this been the inspiration for the original Good Brothers

Your memory serves you right. Sylvia played autoharp. The Good Brothers sang at the Mariposa Hall of Fame show the other night and they said the autoharp had been inspired by Sylvia!!
Not much chance of a reunion for these 2--clearly this was an unusual circumstance--Sylvia has said absolutely not.
