Hi y'all,
I've just unearthed a great cover of "Cold on the Shoulder" done up in bluegrass style. It's by Tony Rice from his 1984 covers album "Cold on the Shoulder". He also does a version of "Bitter Green" on the album, released on Rounder Records. Lots of good banjo and fiddle here.

Which got me thinking...it would be cool if Gord incorporated some old-time bluegrass in a new recording. I think it goes well with his voice and lyrics.

Cheers,
Elderberry

I have Tony's very nice blugrass CD
"Tony Rice Sings Gordon Lightfoot "
see details on a new ebay auction today at:-
http://cgi.ebay.com/Tony-Rice-Sings-...QQcmdZViewItem
which as it was issued to collate together all of Tony's GL "covers" also includes
"Cold On The Shoulder"
And I expect is the CD/Album that inspired our talented bluegrass playing French friend Yves

When I think of GL and bluegrass the most obvious song I think of is "Old Dan's Records" because of the banjo and (I think) dobro on the original studio recording. Surely some enterprising hill folk somewhere has covered it East Kentucky style?

Back in the old days ( late '80's - early 90's), we used to do alot of bluegrass jams and always played Home from the Forest, Redwood Hill, etc. Lightfoot's older songs adapt very well to bluegrass music.

...but can we get Gord to bust out the banjo on a new recording? Hey, Gord fronting the "Circle era" Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It's all good. Anyone know if Gord's working on any new material?

I used to know how to play the banjo part on ODR. I haven't played the banjo in in at least 6 months. Yes, folks, I do play the banjo and I'm proud to admit it. Let me see... where did I put that banjo?
I play the fiddle, too. I'm really just a Northern Maine hick at heart.
