Cummings/Gord

Hi There: Burton Cummings does a pretty much dead-on Lightfoot imitation on one song from his live solo album from a couple of years back. And, of course, on The Guess Who's "Wheatfield Soul" album is the song "Lightfoot" which is a tribute to Gordon and his early group. Cummings is an animal in my opinion. I saw The Guess Who on their 2000 reunion tour (drove to Thunder Bay from Minnesota) and he projected to the back rows. I think his is one of the best rock voices ever--super buzzy. I saw Randy Bachman "unplugged" in Toronto a year or so ago. He was fine but did not have near the energy. I've seen Gordon three times since the Waiting For You tour. Good, solid shows and he seems to be having fun. That's all that should matter at this point! Eric O.

I would have loved catching that reunion show. Guess Who and the Band were my favorites.

I recently acquired all the U.S. Top 40 hits of theirs. They are really under-rated.

I can't say that Burton's solo hit "Stand Tall" is the greatest. It's catchy and at the most,interesting.

I think The Guess Who deserervs R&R H.O.F. consideration. Then again,speaking hitwise,I think almost anyone who can manage to get 10 to 15 hits at all deserves it.

P.S.-I never mentioned,my other favorite of theirs is "Clap For The Wolfman".

That's the only song of Cummings I ever knew ("Stand Tall"). I was really surprised to find out about his affiliation with other bands. That's a big "duhhh" for most of you, I know, but, a complete surprise for me. And although I usually didn't waste my money on 45's, I did buy that one. I really liked it.

Thanks for the posts. Like GL, the hits of The Guess Who are only a caricature of the group. I know this is Mr. Lightfoot's board, but permit me to drone on for just a minute. The Guess Who wrote/played pop, rock and roll, blues, and jazz during an amazing 10-year stretch. Two of the lesser-known albums I would urge folks to try and locate are "#10" and "So Long, Bannatyne." Both are from the post-Randy Bachman era. NOTHING against Ran, but these recordings still sound very fresh to me. Thanks, Eric O.

with some of these bands it's hard to make out which is a band's real farewell or real reunion tour, lol...there was a reunion back in early 80's and then the Running Back to Canada tour more recently BUT i think of their reunion as the 3 song set they played at the closing of the Commonwealth Games, they wouldn't play a 4th tune even though the crowd was buzzing and starved for more, i think the agreement was that they could only stand to be on stage together for $150K a tune...glad my taxes went to some cause that was entertaining anyhow, lol

Yes, 2000 was a reunion tour, not a farewell. Full show, no "back up" band, just the guys playing and singing. Acoustic set showcasing Bachman's great chops. I think there is a DVD of it. I think my ticket was $45US.
