In Bitter Green, does the guy come back after she dies? I hate that!! What do you think happens in the song?

ah, but the second verse is just the speculation of others. What about the third verse?
"there comes a weary stranger
his tears fall in the dust
kneeling by the churchyard
in the autum mist, dreaming of her kiss..."

I'm with LSH. She died and he came back one day long after.

Yes he did come back but this verse tells a different story:
"Some say he was a sailor who died away at sea
Some say he was a prisoner who never was set free
Lost upon the ocean he died there in the mist
Dreaming of her kiss"
Maybe it was just small-town gossip...

of course it was...since almost every line is preceded by "some say". Obviously, they were wrong

I still belive that Bitter Green is a dog. Just look at some of the lyrics.
Bitter Green they called her
Walking in the sun
Loving everyone that she met
Bitter Green they called her
Waiting in the sun
Waiting for someone to take her home
I mean, what woman would be loving everyone, and waiting for someone to take her home? A starcrossed lover, a tramp, or a cocker spaniel? Add to that the verse that she was waiting for her master to kiss away her tears, and you have one unhappy puppy.

It's funny that you should say that, Jenney. i always pictured Bitter green as a Cocker Spaniel, or a really well-bred mutt.

A woman that would love everyone and wait for someone to take her home?? Sounds like Grace from "Will & Grace!"
(or would that be Karen?)

From the liner of "Songbook".
BITTER GREEN
Written in a noisy diesel taxicab on the way in [to London] from Heathrow. My wife adopted that as her song after our divorce. I went over to London to write the album, to jog my mind into a writing space.
