Best threads?

I was pleasantly surprised to find such an active website about Gordon Lightfoot and I too felt like the only Lightfoot fan in the whole world until I came here. I am not nearly as knowledgeable as many of you, and I'm still learning quite a bit, but steadily getting up to speed... with some help from all you guys + gals! :D

Isn't it weird how many of us did think, that we were the only Gordon Lightfoot fan in the world ?

The guy has toured all over the world, and he is a Millionaire many times over. And to actually think that I would be his only fan...

Those 4 lines are pure genius. So simple, yet I dont think anyone else could have engraved that in my mind so perfectly.



There is a place that I drive by, close to Moncton. It's on the TCH, {Trans Canada Highway}, you look in the distance, there is lots of green dark forests,(mountains of it) and to top it all 2 railroad tracks, side by side, that seems to go forever in that forest.

Everytime I go by there, those 4 lines do come to mind. And many a times I will play CRT in the CD player. It's something that I can not describe in words, how proud it makes me feel to be a Canadian, like he is... Thank's so much to you ~Gordon Lightfoot~.

Jesse, I too believe those words are some of the most beautiful and eloquent ever written, hence their inclusion in my signature line. Like many things Lightfoot, those words have touched my soul.

More and more, I look with yearning to the north and I truly believe if I had to choose another country to call my home, it would be Canada. The more I learn about it, the more I am intrigued. Each experience I have had in your beautiful country has been wonderful. From fishing trips with my dad to motorcycle trips with my husband. I have found the scenery exceedingly beautiful and the people very friendly. And of course the Canadian people I have met and keep meeting on this forum ... what can I say, they're my kind of people. I look forward to spending much more time in your country in the future, and I actually have 2 possible trips coming up in 2008.

Being an American, I was always brought up to believe that I live in the greatest country on earth. I agree that it is great, but the older I get, the more I realize that the universe doesn't revolve around the good old US of A only. I am not always proud of what our country has done, and what it is doing. I am definitely not always proud of our leadership and can even understand why some of our "enemies" hate us so badly. It would have been unimaginable to think those thoughts growing up!

Jesse, you have every right to feel proud to be Canadian.

All very interesting John. Whatever became of Matthew Fifer? I remember E.M.P. answering one of my letters, telling me about this Mr. Fifer, that had opened up a site, on the Internet, about our beloved Poet. I of course at that time did not own a computer, and tought how I was going to miss out a lot on GL...

so there you are J-J now you know what a blessing in your life your computer is.
Regarding Matthew,I have corresponded with him by email within the last year he is now I believe living and working in Boston .He told me that his pioneering GL site was purely a temporary demonstration aid for the students he was teaching HTML/web authoring to at NWU to show what one could do on a web site so he naturally chose GL as the subject.
the site was hosted on his own webspace on the main NWU website,so when he left that employment the site was taken down

If you google long enough for "mfifer lightfoot" as I just did you will find sites that still list Matthew's old URL which was at:-

if you then copy and paste that into the "take me back" search box at httP://www.wayback.notlong.com
you will find that there are 24 sets of his website archived from 1998 through 2001

Just as every American should be proud of being American as well and never forget it. It appears you're not by your sentiments. I hope thats not so, but I kind of get that impression. While the current state of affairs is admittedly disheartening, I must respectfully disagree with you; perhaps it's not just the leader but the people who have become little more than armchair critics.

As many problems as we have, every other country has their own too. This is my country and no it's not perfect but I stand by it.
